“Star Trek” actor Sir Patrick Stewart has died at the age of 86, his longtime spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak posted to Instagram, noting that the actor died as a result of Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

Although audiences around the world came to know Sir Patrick Stewart as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in the “Star Trek” universe, his acting career began decades earlier. He discovered Shakespeare at age 12, developed a lasting passion for the stage, and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966. While he appeared in several films during that period, his breakthrough into mainstream fame arrived in the late 1980s with “Star Trek.” Stewart never viewed that late-career recognition as a burden. During an appearance on “Q with Tom Power,” he said that reaching stardom shortly before turning 50 meant he was “matured enough not to be overwhelmed by the experiences.” In his memoir, “Making it So: A Memoir.” he also reflected on how valuable it had been to take on many different kinds of acting work before becoming famous, saying he wished more performers could enjoy that same path.

Stewart eventually became a household name, not only through “Star Trek,” but also as Professor Charles Xavier in the “X-Men” films. Despite the very different worlds represented by those roles, he continued to rely on the theatrical training that shaped him. In an interview with PBS NewsHour, Stewart explained that studying a demanding Shakespearean figure and preparing for a science-fiction character required the “exactly the same” approach.

Patrick Stewart wore his heart on his sleeve

Sir Patrick Stewart is survived by his children, Daniel and Sophie, from his first marriage to Sheila Falconer. The actor acknowledged that his dedication to acting sometimes came at the expense of his family life. In a 2009 interview with Independent, he admitted, “I could’ve done better as a parent, when my kids were little … I was just obsessed with my work and everything else took second place.” He said he hoped to repair those bonds, particularly with his grandchildren. Stewart later suggested in 2023 that the family relationship had encountered another difficult period. Whether they privately made peace afterward remains unknown, but Daniel, Sophie, and Stewart’s grandchildren are in the thoughts of those mourning the actor.

Stewart is also survived by his third wife, Sunny Ozell, with whom he shared a notably close relationship. Fans often saw glimpses of their marriage through affectionate anniversary posts on Instagram. Their 2013 wedding carried an especially memorable connection to Stewart’s “X-Men” family: Sir Ian McKellen, his longtime friend and onscreen rival, officiated the ceremony. McKellen revealed that detail during an appearance on “The Jonathan Ross Show.” The two actors frequently appeared together in interviews and made headlines in 2015 when they kissed on the red carpet. McKellen later joked to USA Today, “It’s a nice thing about Patrick … he is a straight man who has absolutely no problem with having gay friends. I think he gave me a kiss because he thinks I would like it.” They shared another kiss in 2020.

Patrick Stewart’s life included both personal struggles and extraordinary professional achievements, and he rarely shied away from speaking candidly about either. His loved ones remain in the thoughts of fans and colleagues at this difficult time.
