The Hills alums, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag have been making a comeback after losing their home in the Palisades fire on January 7, 2025. It then brought back some stories about the couple, like losing their $10 million fortune in 2013, which was partly due to Spencer’s crystal obsession.

Yes, that’s why they’re raising funds online through GoFundMe and turning Heidi’s 15-year-old flop album, Superficial​​​​​​, into a no. 1 hit. Spencer got into these “alternative healing methods” after The Hills ended in 2010.

Reports say that Spencer spent between $500,000 to $1 million on crystals after his stint on The Hills. It was a lot, given that his current estimated net worth is down to $1 million. Ironically, he got into the pricey hobby as a way to cope with his and Heidi’s financial problems.

Like most crystal aficionados, Spencer believes these stones carry “energy” and healing properties. He’s aware it may be a pseudoscience, but he insists it’s not “make-believe” either, citing other notable figures who valued them. “Nikola Tesla said crystals were like living beings,” he told Refinery29 in 2017. False authority fallacy, but OK.

But Spencer’s love for crystals transcends their unconfirmed healing powers. “If one day we prove there is energy off of them and everyone agrees, that would be great,” he told Business Insider that same year. “If not, I’m fine with them not. And they look dope to me.”

In 2018, Spencer launched his crystal shop, Pratt Daddy, to unload some of his collections at first. It eventually started making $300,000 a month by 2022, two years after the business made him and Heidi “broke” for the second time. It was chronicled in The Hills: New Beginnings Season 2.

He then shared that he had to offload employees during the pandemic. Pratt Daddy was no match for its “competitor,” Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop (Spencer believed they were rivals). He said Goop was selling an “$85 medicine bag of tumbled rocks” while he “was shopping real crystals.”

Spencer’s wife was initially against his crystal collection—stopping him from “using baby money to just be buying rocks.” But Heidi was the first one to get into it (obviously not as crazy), given her upbringing in the historic mining town of Crested Butte, Colorado.

She even had $27,000 worth of crystals during the birth of their first son, Gunner Stone. “They represent spiritual protection, health and a higher realm of love,” Heidi said of Spencer’s suggestion, which she wasn’t on board at the beginning.

Don’t get Spencer wrong, he’s not totally cuckoo for crystals. He thinks they’re simply “amazing tools for meditation and going deeper within because that is where the real work is done.”

However, he couldn’t help crediting them for The Hills reboot (2019-2022), which he said was “literally manifesting dreams” because he “never wanted The Hills to end.”

As a responsible crystal entrepreneur, he cautioned that “the only thing [is] crystals aren’t immediate, you know? It took eight years.” Well, it also took them “lots of crystals,” including child-size ones as seen on MTV’s Cribs.

The house tour was filmed while Heidi was still pregnant with their second son, Ryker, in 2022. One of the crystals they were excited to talk about was “the first crystal we ever bought, or Spencer was ever drawn to,” said Heidi.

Her husband then shared the story behind it, which was probably why the “I’ll Do It” hitmaker wasn’t into the hobby at first. “We were told that it was from a volcano in Peru. We were definitely lied to,” Spencer laughed. “It’s for sure from Brazil, out of a mine. But you know, it was a good salesmen out there.”

Unfortunately, most of these crystals are now gone after their $3.8 million Palisades home burned down. But on January 10, 2025, Spencer shared a few pieces he was able to save. “…One crystal from the backyard, one [more] crystal from the backyard,” he said while narrating finds from his bag that also contained some of his sons’ toys.
