Strictly pro Nikita Kuzmin has admitted that diabetes “can sometimes feel like an invisible battle”, as he opened up on dancing through the incurable condition.

Nikita, who is busy training for Blackpool Week with partner Layton Williams, spoke out about living with Type 1 diabetes to raise awareness on World Diabetes Day.

Taking to Instagram, the dancer shared a selfie brandishing his Libre sensor, which is attached to his arm and monitors blood sugar levels.

Ukrainian dancer Nikita wrote: “Did you know that today is World Diabetes Day?

“Thanks to Dexcom, I know when I can take a break from my long dance training sessions!

“This year for World Diabetes Day @dexcomuk are asking our community to share the things that we would like the world to know about life with diabetes.

“Diabetes can sometimes feel like an invisible battle and raising awareness around both the highs and lows, as well as the key symptoms of diabetes, is essential; increased thirst, tiredness, weight loss and toilet use.

“Whilst everyone’s symptoms can be different you should always consult a healthcare professional if you experience these.”

The star then urged his 217,000 followers to get involved, adding: “What would you like the world to know? Get involved by sharing a selfie with your message on your channel!”

Fans took to the comments section of Nikita’s post to praise him for speaking out, with one writing: “My Daughter was diagnosed in April and when she saw your Dexcom she was so happy that you can do what you do with Type 1.

“Keep showing that Dexcom and inspiring young people!”

Another added: “You’re a perfect ambassador for ppl with diabetes. You are showing ppl that having diabetes doesn’t have to stop ppl following their dreams, and can achieve anything.

“So proud of what you are doing for diabetics everywhere, you’re inspirational.”(sic)

Nikita was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was 13, and now believes the condition is his “superpower”.

He previously revealed during an appearance on BBC’s Morning Live: “When I found out, I thought, ‘My career’s over,’ and the next morning I woke up and I saw all those kids smiling and they were happy and they were diabetics just like me.”
