The couple’s story began in high school, culminating in a wedding in 2000. They share three children together: a daughter and two sons. However, their marriage ended in 2016, with Sutton revealing on the show that the divorce papers were served on her birthday.
In a recent interview with Bravo’s The Daily Dish, Sutton spoke candidly about Christian’s unexpected pursuit of an annulment. She recounted his explanation, saying, “The reason that he gave me was that he thought it would make us better friends.”
Sutton found this reasoning rather intriguing, noting its unusual nature. During the RHOBH season 15 premiere, her mother suggested that Christian’s move might be interpreted as a way of saying, “You don’t matter.” Sutton also took the opportunity to discuss her current relationship with Christian, who remains a significant figure in her life as the father of their children.
She continued, “Yeah, I thought that was a very interesting reason.” Fans will recall that Sutton’s mother said in the RHOBH season 15 premiere that this was Christian’s way of telling her, “You don’t matter.” Sutton also spoke to the outlet about where she currently stands with her ex-husband and the father of her three children.
According to her, “We’re good.” She explained, “He lives in London, so, I don’t see him on the regular, but he sent our youngest to college, and we spent that weekend together, and we had a really great time. Even after we got him to his dorm, we had drinks by ourselves, just to kind of talk about the future of our children and what we’re gonna do there, and so we’re still very much intertwined and always will be. I think we finally made it to the friendship part of divorce.”
Sutton also spoke to US Weekly about her current relationship with Christian. The South Carolina native said, “Our relationship is good. We met when we were 13. We were friends, and so we’re ending up as friends now.” She went on, “It’s good, but that’s why this season was interesting for me because I have been through the well of divorce.”
Regarding his having their marriage annulled in the eyes of the Catholic Church, she said, “I guess that’s just what he needed in the relationship.” Still, learning that her ex wanted this wasn’t easy for Sutton. She admitted, “It was a little bit of a sucker punch. But you know, you get used to things after the initial shock is over.”
From there, she explained the situation, saying, “We did not renegotiate our divorce. I feel great, and I have a good relationship, and my kids are great and happy. That’s the most important part.”
RHOBH airs on Thursday nights on Bravo.
