For some dedicated fans, the death of their favorite celebrity can feel like the death of a family member—especially when their death comes suddenly. The “27 Club” is used to name the group of celebrities who died at age twenty-seven. Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, Jonathan Brandis, and Anton Yelchin are all stars who never made it to twenty-eight years old. Other celebrities have died much earlier in their lives. R&B singer Aaliyah died at just twenty-two years old while flying back from her “Rock the Boat” video shoot in the Bahamas. “Queen of Tejano music” Selena Quintanilla Pérez tragically died after she was shot by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar. She was only twenty-three.

8/8 Takeoff
The Migos’ Takeoff was fatally shot and killed in Houston, Texas in November 2022. He was only twenty-eight years old. He and his uncle and bandmate Quavo were reportedly playing dice when a heated argument resulted in shots being fired. So far, two men have been charged in connection with his murder. The late rapper’s memorial service was held in Atlanta with several celebrities in attendance, including Justin Bieber, Drake, as well as Quavo and Offset.
7/8 Bob Saget
Full House’s Bob Saget tragically passed away in January 2022 at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando, Florida. He reportedly died of head trauma. Bob’s three daughters, wife Kelly Rizzo, and Full House costars were left heartbroken by his sudden death. On Instagram, John Stamos wrote, “I’m not ready to accept that he’s gone. I’m not going to say goodbye yet. I’m going to imagine him still out there, still on the road.”
6/8 Olivia Newton-John
Grease’s Olivia Newton-John died in August 2022 at seventy-three years old. She had famously struggled with breast cancer after being diagnosed in 1992. Olivia’s niece Tottie Goldsmith told A Current Affair that Olivia’s health had declined in the five days prior to her death due to additional “health complications.” Tottie also revealed that when she asked her aunt about death, she said, “I’m not afraid. I’ve done more in my life that I could have ever imagined.”

5/8 Tom Parker
The Wanted’s Tom Parker died of brain cancer in March 2022. He was just thirty-three years old. He is survived by his wife and two children. He had revealed his diagnosis to his fans in October 2020. His four bandmates Max, Jay, Siva, and Nathan were reportedly at Tom’s side when he passed. On the band’s official Instagram, they wrote, “He was our brother, words can’t express the loss and sadness we feel. Always and forever in our hearts.”
4/8 Naomi Judd
Singer Naomi Judd sadly passed away at seventy-six years old in April 2022. Her death came just one day before she was scheduled to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Her actress daughter Ashley Judd shared that her mother died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and that she was the one who had discovered her. The country singer had been open about her struggles with mental illness. Ashley shared that her mother’s death had left her family “shattered.”
3/8 Ray Liotta
Goodfellas’ Ray Liotta suddenly died in his sleep in May 2022 while filming Dangerous Waters in the Dominican Republic. He was sixty-seven years old. He is survived by his daughter, Karsen Liotta, and his fiancée, Jacy Nittolo. His fiancée recently paid tribute to Ray in honor of what would have been his 68th birthday. She wrote, “Today Ray would have been 68. I believe he created a lot for everyone that will live on forever.”
2/8 Aaron Carter
Singer Aaron Carter passed away in his bathroom in November 2022. He was thirty-four years old. He is survived by an eleven-month-old son named Prince; his son’s mother Melanie Martin; his twin sister Angel Carter; his older brother, the Backstreet Boy’s Nick Carter; and his other siblings. Though an official cause of death has yet to be announced, he was reportedly surrounded by compressed air cans and pill bottles when he was found.
1/8 Stephen ‘tWitch’ Boss
Dancer and Ellen DJ Stephen ‘tWitch’ Boss committed suicide in a hotel room in December 2022. He was only forty years old. He is survived by his dancer wife, Allison Holker Boss, and their three children. Following his tragic passing, tributes from his wife, Ellen DeGeneres, and other celebrities poured in. Justin Timberlake wrote, “It’s heartbreaking to hear that someone who brought so much joy to a room, was hurting so much behind closed doors.”
