Love on the Spectrum star Tanner Smith was thrilled to meet Mark Wahlberg in South Carolina during a chance encounter that led to the two posing for an iconic photo together.

Tanner’s mom, Nicci Smith, revealed that her son was eager to cross paths with the Flight Risk actor, 53, and it finally happened since Mark’s daughter, Ella, goes to Clemson University.

The Netflix personality, 25, works nearby at the Shepherd Hotel in Clemson, which collaborates with the ClemsonLIFE program to give people with intellectual disabilities jobs.

Nicci told TODAY.com that Tanner gave her quite a surprise when he sent over a selfie with Mark one afternoon. “So, I asked, ‘Did he know who you were?’ Tanner says, ‘I don’t think he did,’” Nicci shared about their meeting which took place about two weeks ago.

Tanner’s mom said she later recognized the A-lister’s voice when she heard her son on FaceTime as the family was heading to New York City to appear on The Kelly Clarkson Show on April 3.

“It was just such a real, down-to-Earth, special moment. Totally refreshing,” Nicci shared of their chat.

“Tanner, being Tanner, just asks everyone for their phone numbers,” Nicci added. “He doesn’t care if it’s ‘appropriate’ or not — he just asks. So he asked Mark for his number.”

Tanner was given contact info for a man named Ace, who ultimately connected him with the Me Time star. “I hear Mark saying, ‘Why didn’t you tell me who you were?’” Nicci revealed.

“And Tanner, who always walks around the house holding the phone in everyone’s face, comes up to me while I’m packing — hat on, bags half-zipped, just got back from my other son’s shoot — and he goes, ‘Mom, this is Mr. Mark. Say hi!’” she recalled.

“He doesn’t think in terms of celebrity,” Nicci continued. “He wasn’t trying to name-drop or anything like that. He was just pumped to meet ‘Mr. Mark.’ That’s what he called him, like he’s someone’s dad. He’s not thinking of Mark as an actor or celebrity. Just a nice man whose daughter goes to Clemson.”

Tanner, who was diagnosed with autism around 2 years old, has become a breakout star on Love on the Spectrum, documenting his dating journey and life with his family on the show.

Although Tanner didn’t find his perfect romantic match in season 3, he told Netflix’s Tudum the series helped him make “a lot of really good lady friends,” who he says are “very cute and beautiful.”

“My sister Midge is the best!” Tanner gushed about his loving sibling to the site. “She is one of my very best friends in the world, and she helps me when I have hard days. We also laugh and have so much fun together! She talks me through things when I’m confused, and we talk about dating too. I ask her questions about things I don’t know.”

Plus, he also got to meet another celebrity during his appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show — none other than Jack Black, which Tanner described as the “best day of [his] life.”
