In his last several months of life, former King Constantine II of Greece was hospitalized several times for his heart and mobility problems, per People. Although not officially announced, Greek media outlets have reported that Constantine died of a stroke, according to The Guardian. Constantine is survived by his wife the former Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark, as well as his five children Alexia, Pavlos, Nikolaos, Theodora, and Philippos, and nine grandchildren, per the Associated Press.

Neither Prince William nor the Royal Family have released statements on Constantine’s death as of the evening of January 10. While sentiments vary widely in support of the monarchy or against it on Twitter, users are also quick to note Constantine’s pivotal role in Greek history. “The King passed away,” one user wrote. “He loved his country as a real leader. He lives in our hearts and his name will always remain in Hellenic history as the King of the Greeks. May [he] rest in Heaven.”
