There’s a major twist coming into play on Season 27 of The Voice. Fans of the show were shocked to learn this week that a new rule is being implemented that will change the competition forever.

In the most recent episode of NBC’s hit reality show, Carson Daly revealed a new rule that will affect the way the judges participate in the competition. What, exactly, can you expect from this unexpected twist to the show?

Carson Daly Announced The ‘Great News’ To The Judges

In the May 5th episode of the show, Carson Daly was excited to deliver the news of the rule change. “Coaches, lend me your ears. I come with great news,” he teased them, building up anticipation for the big reveal. Once he had their attention, Carson explained what the “super twist” for the season would be:

As soon as Carson announced the twist, the entire panel of judges appeared floored, many of them too stunned to speak at first. This change-up to the competition comes as a major one, as a large part of the show is the stress the judges feel when they have to deliberate and cut participants they’ve grown attached to throughout the episodes.

For his part, Carson was cheeky in dropping such a bombshell on the judges. “We love a good plot twist,” he said with a grin, clearly enjoying the shock that the other four were experiencing.

The Judges Had A Huge Reaction To The Announcement

The concept of the “super save” is sure to shake up the show, and certainly it will shake things up for the franchise’s four judges more than anyone else. In the wake of the announcement, the judges expressed not only how surprised they were, but possibly also how resentful they were that Carson (and the producers behind the show, no doubt), waited so long in the season to fill them in on the twist.

One of the show’s most beloved judges, John Legend, explained the emotional turmoil that he’d been under in his role:

Some of the others echoed John’s statement, chiming in to note how overwhelmed they were feeling. “How did you keep this secret?” Michael Bublé questioned Carson, while fellow judge Kelsea Ballerini added, “I’m overstimulated!” We’ll see soon enough who the four decide to save thanks to the new twist.

Fans of the show will know that this isn’t the only change that’s in store for the show. It was also previously announced that long-time judge Adam Levine would be stepping away from the franchise, with the singer noting that he felt it was time to take a break and spend more time with his family instead.
