No matter how old someone gets, they always remember puberty, and those who are at that confusing phase of their lives, really do need all the help they could get to navigate through it smoothly, and maybe have a laugh or two about themselves in the midst of everything. No matter how many friends or family one can have close to him, sometimes the role of entertainment and film is much more pronounced and profound to someone who may be waiting for a sign, which is why these television shows are important.

Coming of age is a concept that surpasses puberty though. It is a metaphor for maturity in all subjects of life, whether it be emotional, social, or spiritual. The moment or journey to illumination is not confined to a certain age group or life experience, it can happen to anyone, anytime, and under any circumstance. Which is why these shows, despite the fact that not all of them focus on adolescence, have successfully connected with audiences around the world in terms of showing the growth a person can undergo, and how each person can blossom to a better, more enlightened version of themselves. Here are some of the best coming of age television shows for fans’ next binge!

8 Sex Education Actually Had Some Bits Of Valuable Information, And A Lot Of Laughs

Sex Education has held its own comfortably on Netflix since 2019. The British comedy-drama streaming television show stars Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, and Emma Mackey and takes on the intricacies of the lives of both students and parents at their fictional high school. Most of the show’s fine-tuned writing and hilarious situation are related to the tough or awkward spots the characters face in terms of sexual intimacy. With Sex Education being the literal main subject of the show, it instills many much needed lessons and morals that pertain to the subject which a lot of people may be oblivious to, especially young people.

7 That 70s Show Was The Safe Zone Of Many Generations

One of the most nostalgic coming of age shows is absolutely That 70s show. Though it actually aired in the late nineties and early 2000s, it takes place in a fictional town in Wisconsin and revolves around a group of friends who are trying to lead a purposeful life as they also figure out what it means to be an adult. That 70s show was so influential that it inspired a British version called Days Like These. The show is also famous for being the meeting place for the now happily married couple Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis ages before they got together. In most recent news, Netflix has just released a sequel titled That 90s Show, and fans are on the fence about it, but it is still too early to judge.

6 Atypical Highlighted The Difficulties Neurodivergent People Face Growing Up

What is life like being a neurodivergent teen on the autism spectrum? So many people have lived their entire lives attempting to navigate the world as they experience it, but the intricacies of being neurodivergent is barely portrayed on screens by any measure. The Guardian reviewed the TV show saying,” Deeply well-meant and probably incredibly illuminating for those who don’t know much about the condition, the show is unequivocally a ‘Good Thing’ in and of itself, and it’s hard not to applaud both the intention and the effort.” That is exactly why this show is important. Coming of age looks different for everyone, and for some, especially non neurotypical teens, it might look somewhat close to this.

5 Though Stranger Things Is Supernatural, It Is Still Full Of Heart

Though Stranger Things is the furthest away from being placed on the grounds of reality, much of what its story and characters stand for are valuable lessons to everyone. With the cast being mostly children at the time of the first season, the show followed them into their teen years and showed much of what really constituted friendship, love, and family. The main characters Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Will are all learning how to deal with both the supernatural and all that comes with their teenage years including how to handle bulling, how to actually be in a functioning relationship, and the occasional goings-on of how to defeat an inter-dimensional monster.

4 The Cult Classic Freaks And Geeks Holds Up Today

Freaks and Geeks was a show that aired in 1999 and unfortunately only lasted for one season. The show did not enjoy much success at the time of its release making NBC cancel it only after 12 episodes of the scheduled 18 episodes aired. However, the show became a cult classic hit as it had a host of at the time rising comedic geniuses like Seth Rogen, Linda Cardellini, Lizzy Caplan, Jason Segal, James Franco, and John Francis Daley. Fans continue to revisit the show scanning every titbit and learning every little fun fact about their favorite high school freaks and geeks.

3 How I Met Your Mother Has Endless Lessons In Adulthood

Now, all the characters on HIMYM were way past puberty, in fact they were all working and figuring out their careers, but that does not mean that they did not have much growing up to do. The show’s clever format bounced back and forth between the character’s pasts and hinted at their future with all these stories being a dedication for Ted Mosbey’s children in order to tell them how he literally met their mother with each episode carrying a lesson or at least some fun times to recount to both the audience and the fictional children watching.

2 Anne With An E Was Just So Wholesome

The best thing about this show was the titular character of Anne and her steadfast and bubbly nature. Anne With An E is literally a lesson in optimism and facing whatever it is that life might throw at one’s way with goodness, and the resolve to make things right. Unfortunately, the show was canceled after three seasons despite it being a certified hit, but it is definitely worth the watch.

1 Malcolm In The Middle Helped Many Navigate Between Life At Home And School

Some people give a very convincing argument that Malcolm In The Middle is the best sitcom that was ever created. Aside from perfectly executed jokes, and clever plot points for every single episode, having a character like Malcolm who shares the same insight as the audience was very new and remains to be a groundbreaking way of writing a character. These insights not only peer into the subjects of friends, family, and the absurdity of day to day life, but they’re thoughts that everyone watching is probably thinking of which is exactly makes Malcom In The Middle an ageless piece of television.
