The music world is mourning the loss of Timothy Very, the drummer for Manchester Orchestra, who has passed away at 42. While the band has not disclosed the cause of his death, they expressed their profound sorrow over his unexpected departure. In a heartfelt message shared on their social media platforms on Sunday, February 15, the band described their grief and disbelief.
“The entire Manchester Orchestra family is shattered by the sudden passing of our brother, Timothy Very,” the statement began. “He was the most beloved person any of us had the privilege to know. We have been dreading this moment, as we struggle to come to terms with this reality. Tim had an unparalleled warmth that made him instantly likable, and his infectious laugh had a way of making everyone feel welcome and supported.”

They went on to tell fans: “Strangers quickly became friends and friends became family. He had an undeniable light that was only matched by his dedication and love for his craft, which he was clearly put on earth to do. No words can ever do him justice.Â
“Please know, if you are someone who loved Tim, he loved you too. The only thing that Tim loved more than creating music was being with his family. You’d be pressed to find a more joyful dad. We love you, Tim, thank you for loving us. You are a force of positivity that will be a constant presence in the rest of our days.”Â
Fans flocked to the comments to offer their sympathies and share their fondest memories online. One user penned: “Devastated. Tim changed my husband’s opinion of live music. As a very technical musician and teacher, he found live music to never be as ‘technically perfect’ as the albums, and that bothered him (ugh, I know, I know).
“But then I took him to see MP play, and he was absolutely floored. HE said Tim’s pocket was flawless and couldn’t believe how incredibly MO sounded. I always loved watching Tim at MO shows, too, because his energy was so infectious and bursting with light. Rest easy, Tim. You will be so very deeply missed.”

Another agreed: “Oh my God, this is absolutely heartbreaking. I am so sorry. Tim was an incredible human being who will leave an everlasting impact on so many, and I am so grateful to have known him. Sending all of the love to you guys, and his family.”Â
A third added: “One of the best, kindest, and most immediately welcoming men I’ve ever known. All my love to the rest of you guys and the family, absolutely heartbreaking.” Â
Timothy joined the American rock band back in 2011 and performed on their last four albums: Simple Math, Cope, A Black Mile to the Surface, and The Million Masks of God. Very described himself as a “songwriter’s drummer” during a February 2022appearance on the Drummers on Drumming podcast.Â
He told listeners: “I’d like to think that after doing this for 20 years or so, whatever it’s been at this point, that I’m bringing something to the table that isn’t just drums and grooves and all that, but it’s understanding what a song should have, or could have in it, to hopefully enhance it or hopefully add something – a flavour, a feel to it.Â
“Leaving your mark on a song and feeling like, ‘Man, that’s better ’cause I played on it’. That’s kind of what I’m always sort of circling around and hoping to reach, having an impact on a song that’s just that right thing.
