Tom Cruise’s love for flying played a major role in giving Top Gun: Maverick the green light. After a 30-minute meeting on the set of Mission: Impossible, Cruise agreed to do the film, but it had to be on his terms. Which meant, no CGI, and real action scenes featuring fighter jets flying in the air.
He got his wish, and the film absolutely thrived, bringing in over $1 billion at the box office.
It all stems from Cruise’s love for flying. The man loves to work, though he isn’t afraid to dish out millions, especially on his insane plane collection.

Tom Cruise Refused To Use CGI For The Fighter Jet Scenes In Top Gun: Maverick
Tom Cruise made his intentions very clear early on, alongside Top Gun: Maverick producer, Jerry Bruckheimer. The actor had no intention of using CGI in the film, wanting to give the fans a real experience.
Cruise said, “We just started talking. And I realized that there were things that we could accomplish cinematically.”
“And I started getting excited about this big challenge of, ‘How do we do it?’ So I said to Jerry, I’ll do it if… meaning, I’m not going to do the CGI stuff.”
Cruise understood that given his demands, shooting the film certainly would not be easy, especially when it came to pulling off the scenes with the use of fighter jets. Cruise was ultimately successful, giving the fans an experience that may never see again in film.
“You don’t know how hard this movie is going to be. No one’s ever done this before. There’s never been an aerial sequence shot this way. I don’t know if there ever will be again, to be honest.”

Tom’s vision definitely worked out, as he brought the fans back to movie theaters, with the film generating $1.4 billion at the box office.

Avoiding the use of CGI, all stems from Cruise’s love for flying planes. Jack Sweeney, a Twitter user who identifies planes in the sky was able to unveil some of Cruise’s insane collection.
Business Insider revealed, “The actor is known to have spent millions on buying private aircrafts, including a $4 million World War II-era P-51 Mustang single-seater fighter plane and a $20 million Gulfstream. Sweeney said he has been able to identify Cruise’s P-51, Gulfstream, HondaJet, and a Challenger 300.”
According to Forbes, Cruise obtained his license back in 1994. Now when it comes to flying, it isn’t just about speed, the actor also enjoys the luxury of it all. Particularly his Gulfstream 4 is among the most impressive, as it contains a jacuzzi and screening room. Cruise safely tucks this plane away in his private hangar, which contains his jaw-dropping collection.
Who knows, maybe for his next step, Cruise gets a runway on his own front lawn similar to former bud, John Travolta…
Tom Cruise Paid For His Top: Gun Maverick Co-Stars’ Flight Lessons
Not only is Tom Cruise optimistic about flying, but he feels the same way for others. During the prep for Top Gun: Maverick, actor Glen Powell revealed that getting his flying license was all thanks to Tom Cruise, who even pay for the entire course as a Christmas gift.
Powell revealed on Instagram, “Tom bought me an iPad with my flight school downloaded and prepaid. And yesterday, after months of flying, studying, and testing…I’m the real deal.”
He continued, “Try not falling in love with aviation after living out every pilot’s dream while shooting @topgunmovie. Especially when you see the way @tomcruise flexes it.”
During the shooting of the film itself, Powell had a good feeling about everything that was going down behind the scenes. Clearly, he was right, as the film gave its audience an experience unlike any other.
