When most fans think of Top Chef, they envision the fact that the reality show has had many memorable chefs, including some that should have won. While that makes sense, fans often forget things like how hard competing on Top Chef can be, why chefs fail on the show, and that some winners have been lambasted. Another one of the biggest secrets about Top Chef is that sometimes the show’s competitors can go from loved to hated by fans.
For all of those reasons and the fact that some former competitors have gotten in legal trouble, going on Top Chef can be daunting. Additionally, a scene from Top Chef: Destination Canada shows that the show can be completely heartbreaking for the chefs and fans for a different reason.
Top Chef: Destination Canada Recently Featured A Heartbreaking Event
During the 6th episode of Top Chef: Destination Canada, the chefs were assigned to prepare food in two teams. That situation is always going to set up the possibility of things going wrong that could result in heartache for the chefs and the show’s viewers.
In those team challenges where there are several people in each group, a single chef messing something up can affect their entire group in dramatic ways. With that in mind, it can sometimes seem like things feel somewhat predictable even when things go wrong.
That said, something went wrong during the 6th episode of Top Chef: Destination Canada in a brutal way that nobody would have predicted. Unfortunately for those involved in the situation, the thing that went wrong during the season’s 6th episode was absolutely heartbreaking.
Since it was a team challenge, several of the chefs were trying to help each other in the kitchen. While it is nice to see Top Chef chefs being supportive of one another, the tragic truth is that sometimes the best of intentions can result in tragedy.

In a truly heart-dropping moment, one chef’s attempt to be helpful quickly went completely awry. The reason for that is one of the chefs wound up throwing out a significant element of another person’s dish.
During the challenge, Shuai Wang could be seen moving his way around the kitchen. In an attempt to be helpful, Shuai could be heard commenting that he was going to clean up Katianna Hong’s prep area for her.
According to the Escoffier School of Culinary Arts website, a mise en place is extremely important to a chef during the cooking process. The website explains what the purpose of a mise en place is. “So, what is mise en place’s primary function? The goal of this culinary practice is to have everything ready to go when it comes time to cook, bake, or assemble your final dish. This involves completing a few crucial steps prior to getting started.”
Much to the horror of fans at home, however, Shuai made a heartbreaking assumption. As he was attempting to clean up, Shuai Wang threw out Henry Lu’s mise en place that he’d prepared for his dish.
There were several reasons why this turn of events was so upsetting for anyone who cares about the Top Chef chefs.
The most obvious reason why Henry’s mise en place getting thrown out was so disappointing is how upsetting it is to see a chef’s dish be unintentionally sabotaged.
Just as upsetting is the fact that Shuai seemed heartbroken by the realization of what he had done.

In a confessional interview, Shuai described how devastated he was about how his mistake had affected Henry.
I just jeopardized Henry’s entire dish. I jeopardized my whole entire team. I just want to, like, crawl into a hole and never come back out.
Ultimately, Henry and Shuai’s team lost the challenge and they had to defend their dishes at the Judges’ Table. That moment proved how meaningful Shuai’s screw-up was because when the judges learned what happened, they understood the problems with Henry’s dish better. Worse yet, Kristen Kish later in the episode stated that Henry’s team may have won if his mise en place hadn’t been thrown out.
Had Henry completed his dish, they may have just been the winning team.
Despite that statement, Top Chef is an unforgiving show and Henry came very close to being eliminated from the competition.
Top Chef: Destination Canada Had Another Dramatic Moment
Earlier during the same challenge, fans of the show saw something else dramatic happen in the kitchen. If the situation wasn’t handled differently, things could have gone very wrong during this moment.
As Massimo Piedimonte was preparing his dish, a pot that he was using boiled over. Within a matter of seconds, fire could be seen coming off the top of the pot with flames spreading across the stove-top.
Acting quickly, Massimo covered the flames and suffocated them with the other chefs yelling at him to act fast.
In a confessional interview, Massimo was then shown talking about the mistake that he’d made to create those flames.
I throw some potatoes into a pot of oil without having strained the potatoes. Basically, that’s how you build a bomb.
Several of the other chefs were then shown in confessional interviews making statements about Massimo’s “rookie move.”
