In a twist of fate, Suzi Walker, who once enjoyed the dizzying heights of being a celebrated WAG in the 1990s, is now navigating the rough waters of financial turmoil. Back in 1996, her then-husband, ex-Tottenham goalkeeper Ian Walker, celebrated his England squad call-up with a lavish gift—a stunning pear-shaped diamond. Fast forward three decades, Suzi is compelled to pawn her cherished possessions to tackle the hefty medical bills and legal expenses that have saddled her with a staggering £500,000 debt.
This drastic change follows years of extravagant spending where money seemed as disposable as “toilet paper.” Now aged 52, the former Page 3 model once relished the luxuries that accompanied her husband’s thriving football career. As part of a glamorous circle that included notable names like Victoria Beckham, Coleen Rooney, and Alex Gerrard, Suzi indulged in high-end shopping sprees and relished Euros ’96 in style, with lavish acquisitions from Gucci and Prada, all while toasting with Cristal Champagne.
Embodying the quintessential WAG lifestyle, Suzi embraced trends with a permanent tan and fluctuating bust sizes, dictated by fashion’s whims. “Each round of enhancements cost about £8,000,” she candidly reveals.
Her penchant for luxury knew no bounds; indulging in spur-of-the-moment swaps of her luxury watches for bejeweled Cartier timepieces was not uncommon, nor was employing a “personal shopper at Selfridges” to cater to her opulent tastes.
Yet, those opulent days are now a fading memory as she contends with significant debt. Speaking to The Sun, Suzi reflects on her changed circumstances: “Ending up around half a million in debt and without the financial freedom I once enjoyed has profoundly transformed me. I’ve come to understand what truly matters in life now more than ever.”
Her financial problems arose due to a chronic illness, which went undiagnosed for many years and left her with enormous medical bills. Alongside this, her current husband, Mark Pitman, also had to shell out £600,000 in legal fees two years ago, in a bid to recoup a million he claimed a company owed him in fees.
Describing her health issues, she said: “I knew I was dying, but I couldn’t get a diagnosis from my local hospital. I paid to get private tests.”
Those tests showed she was suffering from a rare and chronic variant of Lyme disease called Babesiosis. It has also led to her suffering from meningitis, brain inflammation and discharge from behind her eyes. “The clinic has literally saved my life because I was put straight on to some very strong drugs to help reduce the inflammation in my brain and body, and I was on IV drips daily. I’ve no idea how it got this chronic,” she reflected.
However, her health issues have caused lapses in other areas of her life, which have cost her dearly. “I’ve been so ill that I’ve barely been able to look at the post. I was ignoring calls from the mortgage company, and the house is in my name.
She now owes around £20,000 and was even threatened with repossession of her house. “It’s amazing my electricity and other things haven’t been cut off,” she told the publication
