Former president Donald Trump‘s arrest on Tuesday dominated the font pages of newspapers around the world.
Most featured an instantly iconic photograph of an expressionless Trump, hunched over a Manhattan courtroom table as he was read the 34 charges for which he was indicted.
The few terms that appeared in headlines told most of the story: ‘Trump Arrested’, ’34 Felony Counts’ and ‘pleads not guilty’. As he entered his plea at around 3pm, Trump became the first US president to answer to criminal charges.
The 16-page indictment is related to multiple payoffs Trump made in the lead up to the 2016 election.
The most notable, a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels, was combined with a $30,000 payoff to a doorman trying to sell information about a child that Trump allegedly fathered out of wedlock, as well as a $150,000 to former Playboy model Karen McDougal.
Outside the court there was division between those who saw his indictment as a weaponization of the justice system by overzealous local prosecutor Alvin Bragg, and those wanting accountability for the Trump years that culminated in January 6.
After his courtroom appearance – the first of what is expected to be many – Trump retreated to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida where later in the day he addressed followers to drum up support for his upcoming presidential campaign.
The judge overseeing the criminal case has set the next in-person hearing for December 4 – about two months before the 2024 Republican presidential primary officially begins.
