Polyfamily star Tyler Rodgers is getting candid about his complicated quad relationship dynamic with Alysia Rodgers, Taya Hartless and Sean Hartless — which was made even more complicated following the birth of Taya’s second child.

“Under Oregon state law, because Sean is Taya’s husband and Taya is the birth mother, by default, he is the father that goes on the birth certificate,” Tyler, 35, said in a preview clip shared by Parade ahead of the Tuesday, May 6, episode.

Tyler, Alysia, 34, Sean, 46, and Taya, 28, moved in together as a polyamorous closed quad in 2020. At the time, married couple Tyler and Alysia already shared two school-aged kids, Dillon, 11, and Reina, 9.

After the family moved in together, Alysia and Taya gave birth to sons Barrett, 4, Carver, 3, and Quentin, 18 months. However, they didn’t know if Sean or Tyler were the fathers of the youngest children, as the men switched rooms every night to spend equal time with both women. Taya said in the Polyfamily trailer that they decided not to find out the identities of the kids’ biological fathers because it could “cause a lot of hurt.”

Despite Quentin’s biological father remaining a mystery, Sean was legally listed as his father on the birth certificate due to Oregon law, which caused Tyler a bit of pain.

“I really wish that I could be on the birth certificate for Quentin. I’m a little bit jealous that Sean is and I’m not,” he said in the clip. “And I wouldn’t take that away from Sean. I just wish I could be there too.”

Tyler continued, “At some point, we’re going to need to find some way to tie us all together and make us all legal parents to all the kids.”

As for Sean, he gushed that it was “absolutely amazing” to hold Quentin in his arms for the first time.

“When he first came out and they handed him to me, it’s amazing. It’s the best feeling in the world,” he added.

In another clip shared by People, the quad couple shared how they navigated life with a newborn.

“In a monogamous relationship, taking care of a newborn can be a bit challenging because there’s just two of you. But for us, we have four parents, so we have the capacity to not have our daily life change much,” Sean said. “We’re able to be rested for the other kids, but because I’m only with Taya and Quentin every other night, Tyler and I have to get our bonding time in when we can, so we’re still trying to figure out what that looks like and not step on each other’s toes.”

However, Alysia admitted that she struggled to “find [her] role” within the parenting dynamic.

“With four adults, trying to find my role and my place within this dynamic is a struggle. Like, I want to be able to help out, but it seems like they already have it covered,” she explained. “Before, when Taya had Carver, I had just had Barrett seven months prior to that, so I still had an infant that I was taking care of.”

She continued, “I didn’t have that same opportunity to bond as much with him, and to this day, I think both the toddler boys are a little bit more attached to their birthing mom. With Quentin, I want things to be a little bit different, so that I can have more attachment to him, too.”
