TLC’s latest docuseries Polyfamily puts a magnifying glass on a new type of relationship — a “closed” quad dynamic. During the season 1 premiere in April 2025, fans will meet married couples, Alysia and Tyler, and Sean and Taya, as they live together, date each other and parent their children.

What Is Quad Polyamory?

Quad Polyamory “is a term for any polyamorous relationship structure that involves four individuals,” according to LGBTQIA+ Wiki. There are no strict rules, as “individuals in the relationship may be involved with one, two, or all three other individuals in the relationship,” and the dynamics can vary between couples.

Who Are ‘Polyfamily’ Stars Alysia and Tyler and Sean and Taya?

Alysia and Tyler are a couple who have been married for 11 years. The pair were parents of two school-aged children before getting into a “closed” quad dynamic with fellow married couple, Sean and Taya. Alysia welcomed has since given birth to baby No. 3. after igniting her relationship with Sean.

Within the quad, Alysia is also dating Sean, while Tyler is dating Taya.

Sean and Taya had no children entering the polyamorous relationship. However, Taya welcomed her first child after igniting her relationship with Tyler. Her second pregnancy is set to be documented during season 1 of Polyfamily.

The fathers of the quad’s three youngest children remain unknown due to their unconventional sleeping arrangements.

“Since the guys switch rooms every night, we don’t know who the fathers of the younger boys are,” Taya said in the trailer for the show that dropped on March 17, 2025. She added that the couples have no plans to find out the identities of the kids’ biological fathers because it could “cause a lot of hurt.”

Instead, the kids have come to know Alysia as “Mom,” Tyler as “Dad,” Taya as “Mama” and Sean as “Daddy.”

How Do the ‘Polyfamily’ Stars Parent Their Children?

With five children, each parent plays an integral role in raising the large family. Sean is a stay-at-home dad, while Taya works part-time and is also a stay-at-home mom. Meanwhile, both Alysia and Tyler work full-time.

“With five kids, we’ve got to be all hands on deck,” Taya told Today.com. “I can’t imagine not having another mom figure around to be able to help with that stuff.”

However, she added, “It’s a constant compromise, it’s a constant communication. Ultimately, we will have the same end goal, right? It’s happy, healthy children. So if we have a hard time deciding on something, we oftentimes will lean back into that, which is a reminder that we’re all on the same team here.”

Alysia noted that having four parents was an advantage to their children, telling the outlet, “We all four have different personal experiences in life. Being able to bring all four of those into the equation when it comes to raising our kids together honestly is a huge advantage.”

When Does ‘Polyfamily’ Premiere?

Polyfamily premieres on April 29, 2025, at 10 p.m. ET on TLC.
