Unpacking the Financial Settlement: Debbie Rowe’s Divorce Agreement with Michael Jackson

Debbie Rowe notably stood as a defender of her former husband, Michael Jackson, on numerous occasions, though their relationship was far from harmonious at times. Interestingly, in 2006 Rowe took legal action against Jackson, accusing him of causing significant distress to her financial situation.

Rowe and Michael entered into marriage in 1996, with a clear understanding that their union was non-romantic. Their primary aim was to help Michael fulfill his deep desire to become a parent. By 1999, they parted ways, seemingly in agreement. After the divorce, Michael’s representative conveyed to CBS News and other media that, “Michael and Debbie remain friends, and they ask that the public respect their desire not to further comment or speculate upon the reasons for their decision.” Initially, Michael retained custody of their children, and for some time, the arrangement seemed stable. However, the landscape changed following serious allegations against Michael, prompting Rowe to seek custody of the children—a move that inadvertently brought her financial struggles to light in June 2006.

According to a report from TMZ, Rowe asserted that Michael failed to fulfill financial commitments made during their separation, which were to amount to $8.5 million once fully paid. CBS News indicated that he had not made any payments since 2003, leaving Rowe on the edge of bankruptcy. She urged for an immediate payment, essential for her ongoing custody battle, as court documents highlighted that without these funds, she would need to represent herself legally.

Despite earlier conflicts, Rowe re-emerged as a significant supporter of Michael Jackson. Posthumously, his publicist Stuart Backerman told CBS News that she defended him amidst adverse claims. Remarkably, even though the legal confrontation occurred earlier in 2006, by September they had reached a settlement. In conversation with Today, Rowe’s lawyer noted, “We’re still dealing with the details but it addresses all of the disputes between the parties.” The attorney emphasized that the settlement unfolded because both sides found it mutually beneficial.

Tragically, Michael passed away a few years later. Interestingly, Debbie Rowe, reflecting on the singer’s untimely death, expressed a sentiment of personal responsibility, believing that as a nurse, she could have intervened.

Other than some legal drama after Michael died (there were rumors she would try to regain custody of the children, but the singer’s mother, Katherine Jackson, had already been named their guardian), for the most part, Rowe has remained out of the public eye since her ex-husband’s death. That said, over the years, she and Michael’s daughter Paris Jackson have offered glimpses into their relationship, and after Rowe was diagnosed with breast cancer, she told ET she’d been there for her every step of the way.
