Inside P Diddy’s prison hell: Chores, steel bed and constant paranoia

Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, once synonymous with luxurious living and extravagant parties, now finds himself in a starkly different reality, marked by mundane tasks, constant vigilance, and the harsh confines of a prison cell. The music mogul, who rose to fame through his ventures in fashion, brand endorsements, and television, is facing an unprecedented downfall. His journey from a net worth approaching a billion dollars to incarceration began unraveling in September 2024, when he was charged with serious offenses, including sex trafficking, racketeering, and running a criminal enterprise.

Initially detained at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Centre, Combs experienced firsthand the facility’s notorious reputation for violence, inadequate oversight, and dismal living conditions. Reports from his early days inside described him as refusing to eat the provided meals, fearing they were tampered with, and exhibiting signs of extreme paranoia. Witnesses noted his perpetual state of anxiety, with many describing him as “scared” and “uneasy,” struggling to find rest in the oppressive environment.

Critics and watchdog organizations have long dubbed the conditions at MDC as “hell on earth,” highlighting its issues with insufficient medical care, overcrowding, and frequent violence.

For Combs, now 56, the shift from his opulent $40 million mansion to a confined cell has been jarring, igniting severe anxiety and deep mistrust of those around him.

Following his conviction on two counts related to transporting individuals for prostitution, his defense team managed to secure a transfer to FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey, seeking slightly better conditions for their high-profile client.

While the new facility is less volatile than MDC, it is still a federal prison with strict routines and no special privileges.

Combs now sleeps on a steel bed with a thin mattress, a stark reminder of how far the father of seven has fallen from his former lifestyle of staff, chefs and round-the-clock comfort.

Alongside the psychological pressure, Combs must also carry out daily prison duties. Reports indicate he has been assigned laundry work, a routine task that involves washing and sorting prison clothing.

For a man who once travelled with stylists and assistants, spending hours in an industrial laundry room is a jarring new reality.

Even after the transfer, reports indicate that paranoia has continued to shape his behaviour. His early fear of eating jail food was widely documented, as was his belief that he could not trust fellow inmates.

Although he is now housed in a programme unit away from the general population — a common placement for high-profile inmates and those at risk — the shift has not eliminated the psychological strain.

The I’ll Be Missing You hitmaker has reportedly tried to keep himself occupied, previously organising a Thanksgiving meal for fellow inmates and attempting to engage in self-improvement programmes while at MDC.

However, the prolonged periods of isolation, combined with the erosion of his once carefully curated public image, have taken a visible toll.

Federal records list June 4, 2028, as Combs’ earliest possible release date, leaving him with years of the same rigid routine ahead.

Any hopes of early movement depend entirely on good-conduct credits and program completion, neither of which can significantly shorten the sentence. For now, he remains bound to the daily grind of Fort Dix — a far cry from the empire he once controlled.
