In a recent development, the medical records of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, have been secured under a court order, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office. These documents will remain confidential “until further notice.”
According to a report by NBC 4 Los Angeles on Monday, December 29, the Los Angeles Police Department successfully sought this court directive to aid their ongoing investigation into the suspicious deaths of the celebrated When Harry Met Sally… director and his spouse.
“The LAPD moved to seal the medical examiner’s records related to Robert and Michele Reiner’s demise,” stated the LAPD in a communication with NBC 4. “Despite the public release of their causes of death, this order was crucial for allowing our Robbery-Homicide Division detectives to access essential details ahead of the media and public dissemination. It was not intended to hinder transparency.”
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office verified on Monday that it had complied with a court mandate received on December 24 to secure the Reiners’ medical records from public access.
“While the cause and manner of death were previously released on these cases, due to the court order, the information is no longer available. No other case information or records, including the Medical Examiner report, can be released or posted on the website until further notice,” the statement said.
“The Department understands the public’s interest in these cases and remains committed to transparency when possible. Information will be made available once the court order is lifted,” the statement added.
People, which said it obtained a copy of the court order, reported on Monday that it bans “the public release of any investigative information, notes, reports, or photos” to anyone but “assigned investigators.”
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office previously confirmed that Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, died from “multiple sharp force injuries.”
The couple were found dead inside their home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on December 14. Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested the following day in connection with the murders.
On December 16, Nick was formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He faces in life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. He is expected to be arraigned on January 7, 2026.
Nick’s siblings, Jake, 34, and Romy, 28, broke their silence on their parents’ deaths in a statement on December 17.
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,” the siblings said. “They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
“We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life,” the statement continued. “We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”
As well as Jake, Nick and Romy, Rob shared adopted daughter Tracy, 61, with his first wife, Penny Marshall.
