Channeling a bit of Jerry Seinfeld’s comedic curiosity, one might ask: What’s up with Usha Vance’s footwear? Despite being in her late 30s, the second lady often opts for shoes that seem more suited to an assisted living facility. Her choice of shoes when the Ohio State Buckeyes visited the White House was so notable that it seemed to warrant its own apology. However, back in October, Usha seemed to break away from her usual style, sporting daring knee-high boots. This shift was temporary, as her latest footwear faux pas leaves us wondering if her troubled marriage is influencing her fashion decisions.
On November 10, 2025, Usha accompanied her husband, Vice President JD Vance, to the Military Advanced Training Center at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Her almost floor-length patterned dress was stylish and appropriate for the occasion, but the flats she paired with it fell flat, doing little to complement her ensemble. The only saving grace for her outfit was that she stood next to JD, who seems perpetually clad in the same uninspiring navy suit.
The couple appeared cheerful, sharing a dance at the Marine Ball just two days prior to their visit to the MATC. Yet, no amount of dancing or fashion missteps can divert attention from the scrutiny their marriage faces during his vice presidency. In late October 2025, JD, renowned for his bestseller “Hillbilly Elegy,” sparked controversy by seemingly minimizing his wife’s Hindu roots and nudging her towards Catholicism.
“Yes, my wife did not grow up Christian. It’s fair to say she was raised in a Hindu family, but not particularly religious in either direction,” JD, who embraced Catholicism in 2019 after years of atheism, stated during a Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi (via The Cut). “Most Sundays, Usha joins me at church. Do I hope she eventually is moved by what moved me? Honestly, yes, I do,” the Trump ally added.
Outdated shoes may be the least of Usha Vance’s concerns
His remarks drew criticism from the Hindu American Foundation and interfaith marriage expert Susan Katz Miller, who cautioned that such statements might signal a lack of respect within the marriage. “To honor your partner and every aspect of their identity is crucial for the honesty required in a marriage,” Miller advised, according to ABC 7 New York. “Secret agendas rarely lead to successful partnerships.”

Yeah, honestly, I do wish that.”
