Hair loss is a phenomenon that spares no one, not even the glittering stars of Hollywood. While celebrities often have the means to undergo hair transplants, these procedures can be intrusive and come with an uncomfortable recovery period. However, when executed with precision, the results can be remarkable, making the temporary discomfort a small price to pay to maintain their public image. Among the many celebrities who seem to have taken this route is “Landman” star Billy Bob Thornton. Although Thornton has not publicly confirmed undergoing a hair transplant, a glance at his before-and-after photos suggests otherwise.

Back in 1999, as Thornton was busy promoting his film “Pushing Tin,” alongside future wife Angelina Jolie, his career was soaring. But his hair was another story. During this period, Thornton’s hair appeared notably thinning, with significant loss at the top by the time the film’s press tour commenced.

Fast forward to the 2017 Golden Globes, and Thornton emerged with a head full of salt-and-pepper hair, complete with medium-length bangs. The transformation was so significant that it raised eyebrows. While one might whimsically consider a miraculous hair revival, the simplest explanation is often the correct one. Thus, it seems likely that Thornton benefited from a successful and natural-looking hair transplant.
Hair transplants, though effective, carry the risk of variable outcomes. Some celebrities invest heavily in restoring their hair, only to find the results fall short. Fortunately for Thornton, whatever he did to reclaim his hair was successful. But he had a contingency plan just in case: hats.
Known for his impressive hat collection, Thornton frequently pairs them with scrub caps or scarves, a signature look that hasn’t gone unnoticed. This double-layered hat fashion even caught the attention of TMZ, which questioned him about it in November 2024. His response? “It’s just kind of a thing I saw a friend of mine do years ago … and I thought, ‘You know what? I like that.’ So I just started doing it.”

Hair transplants, while quite effective at restoring hair loss, can actually be hit or miss. Unfortunately, some celebs end up spending a fortune on the procedure, only for it not to take. Fortunately, whatever Billy Bob Thornton did to restore his hair worked, but he already had a backup plan in case it didn’t stick: hats.
The actor has become known for his extensive hat collection, which he often wears in pairs with a scrub cap or scarf. The peculiar practice has attracted so much attention that TMZ even asked him about it in November 2024. “It’s just kind of a thing I saw a friend of mine do years ago … and I thought, ‘You know what? I like that.’ So I just started doing it.”
With that said, he gave a different answer for his multi-hat situation in January 2026. While speaking with “CBS Mornings” about this personal style (and while wearing the hat in the photo above), Thornton shared his hilarious reasoning for pairing his hats with other head coverings. “I put it on, but they don’t work by themselves,” he said about why he wouldn’t wear a singular beanie (via People). “You look like a pinhead if you wear it by itself,” he continued, adding, “So I thought, what if I put this [red hat] on top?” Simple as that!
