Peter Byrne, the vocalist and co-founder of ’80s New Wave and synth-pop duo Naked Eyes, has died at 74.
Byrne found fame alongside the late Rob Fisher through a string of hits, including 1983’s “Always Something There to Remind Me” and 1984’s “Promises, Promises.”
A statement posted on the band’s official website said Byrne “died peacefully in Los Angeles on Monday” following “a brief illness.” No cause of death has been disclosed.
Naked Eyes also scored Top 40 success with “When the Lights Go Out” and “(What) In the Name of Love,” featured across the duo’s two studio albums.
Byrne and Fisher formed Naked Eyes in 1982. Fisher died in 1999 at the age of 42.
Fans paid tribute to Byrne across social media. One person wrote on X, “I hope Pete had some great final chapters to his life! Naked Eyes still tracks in several of my playlists today.”
“This one hurts 😢,” another fan posted, while a third reflected, “The sheer amount of strong British vocalists fronting bands in the early-mid ’80s was quite impressive.”

“A legend indeed. RIP,” another mourner wrote.
According to the band’s website, Byrne was born in Islington, North London. He departed Naked Eyes after the release of the group’s second album in 1984. Two years after Fisher’s death, Byrne issued his first solo album, “The Real Illusion.”
In 2007, he followed it with “Fumbling With the Covers,” an album featuring cover versions and Naked Eyes songs.
Byrne released his final studio album, “Disguise the Limit,” in 2021. A remastered edition of Naked Eyes’ self-titled 1983 debut arrived in 2025.
Rolling Stone reported that, after Naked Eyes disbanded following the release of their sophomore album, “Fuel For the Fire,” Byrne provided vocals for Stevie Wonder’s 1985 song “Part-Time Lover.”
The outlet also noted Byrne’s songwriting work for the Olsen twins, as well as contributions to television and film.
Byrne is survived by his three children, Merlin, Dylan and Chloe; his siblings Eileen, Sandy, Carol and Steve; and his ex-wife, Elana.
A private family service is planned. In the statement, however, fans were encouraged to “please support his music” in honor of the late singer.
