Gripping Regency drama Miss Austen started recently, serving as an adaptation to Gill Hornby’s 2020 novel of the same name and exploring the historical mystery of why Cassandra Austen (played by Keeley Hawes) burned the majority of her sister Jane’s (Patsy Ferran) personal letters.

The four-parter will be airing weekly on the BBC and is also streaming in its entirety on the BBC iPlayer for those who can’t wait week on week for the next episode.

Many viewers are keen to know more about the locations where the show was filmed and set.

Miss Austen is set in 1830 in the wake of Fulwar Craven Fowle’s (Felix Scott) death. Cassandra goes to his home in Kintbury to help his daughter Isabella Fowle (Rose Leslie) to pack up their belongings and move put to make way for the new curate Mr Dundas (Thomas Coombes) and his family, but she is also seeking out her sister’s personal correspondence and to prevent them falling into the wrong hands.

The story flits from the present back to the past when Jane was still alive and delves into Cassandra’s younger years. There are several settings, including Kintbury, Sidmouth, Winchester and Basingstoke Assembly Rooms.

In terms of filming locations, Adwell House in Thame was primarily used as the stand-in for Kintbury Vicarage.

The Adwell Estate is 40 miles from Central London and just 12 from Oxford with the location previously used for filming on various productions, including several murder mysteries.

The estate is comprised of a hamlet, the main stately home, fishing lakes and gardens.

The house and garden are historic with the estate also containing Adwell Cop where a Bronze Age barrow – or burial site – is situated.

A church, manor and mill were located in this area with the main house undergoing alterations and renovations in the 1780s.

Meanwhile, scenes at the Austens’ residence of Steventon Vicarage were filmed in the Grade II listed country manor of Shottesbrooke House, Maidenhead in Berkshire, which was once the home of Sir John Smith, founder of The Landmark Trust, and the trust’s offices are still located on the grounds of the estate.

The house was also the residence of Henry Powle, a 17th century Speaker in House of Commons.

The picturesque seaside town of Sidmouth, where the Austens went on holiday was actually filmed in the East Sussex coastal towns of Rye and Winchelsea.

Rye has been used for numerous productions, such Doctor Who, Foyle’s War and The Darling Buds of May.

George Clooney’s Hollywood movie The Monuments Men was partly shot in locations including Rye, Camber Sands and Winchelsea.

Finally, Langleybury House, Kings Langley served as a multitude of locations for Miss Austen, namely Winchester, Southampton and the Basingstoke Assembly Rooms.

Langleybury House is another Grade II listed mansion and has been used for the past decade as a filming location

The manor house is vacant, which makes it ideal for filming with the site also housing two sound stages. According to the website, it has been used in over 100 different productions.
