Annie Wersching has become one of the earliest Hollywood stars to pass away in 2023. The actress was still only 45 years old, but succumbed to cancer after fighting the disease for a few years. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death around the world, and even showbiz stars have not been spared.
Sofia Vergara, Kathy Bates and Hugh Jackman are among a few lucky actors who have been diagnosed with the illness but managed to beat it. Sadly, Wersching joins a list of the likes of Chadwick Boseman, Powers Boothe and even Marlon Brando who lost their battle to cancer.
Wersching’s husband Stephen Full confirmed the news of her demise in a statement to CNN. The statement said, in part: “There is a cavernous hole in the soul of this family today. But [Annie] left us the tools to fill it. She found wonder in the simplest moment. She didn’t require music to dance. She taught us not to wait for adventure to find you.”
The timing of Wersching’s death also somehow piles on to the sadness: she was the voice behind the character Tess in the famous video game The Last of Us, which has now become a sensationally popular TV series on HBO. Here are some of the actress’ other most prominent roles.
Annie Wersching Played Renee Walker In 24
Annie Wersching famously featured in 24 as FBI Agent Renee Walker. She first appeared in the first episode of Season 7, and her tenure on the show lasted all the way to the 18th episode of the following season. Renee was introduced as a federal agent tasked with working alongside Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer to stop terrorist attacks on American soil.
Throughout the course of the two seasons, Renee and Jack form a close working relationship as they race against the clock to prevent the terrorist plots from coming to fruition.
The two develop a close personal and professional relationship as they work together, but this is also complicated by the dangerous and stressful nature of their jobs, and they struggle to reconcile their personal feelings with the realities of their work.
In a dramatic and heartbreaking turn of events, Renee is killed by a Russian agent. Her death has a profound impact on Jack, who is devastated by the loss of a close friend and comrade. The ripple effect of his vengeful actions thereafter reverberates to the very final episodes of the show.

Annie Wersching Also Starred In Bosch And Timeless
Annie Wersching’s portfolio as an A-list television actress was enhanced by starring roles in Bosch and Timeless. In the former, she portrayed Police Officer Julia Brasher, described as “a rookie cop [who is] assigned to the Hollywood Division.
She becomes romantically involved with [main character] Bosch (Titus Welliver), but comes into conflict with him when he realizes that she makes up the rules as she goes along.”
Wersching started out as part of the main cast in Bosch, and featured in each of the show’s ten episodes in the first season. She only returned to the role in a recurring capacity after that, appearing in one episode of Season 2 and finally in two more during the course of Season 7.
She played a similar supporting role in NBC’s science fiction drama series Timeless, which aired on the network for two seasons between 2016 and 2018. The show followed a team of experts, led by history professor Lucy Preston (Abigail Spencer), as they travel through time in order to prevent a mysterious organization from altering the course of history. Wersching played a character known as Emma Whitmore.
What Other Roles Did Annie Wersching Play Before Her Passing?
One of Annie Wersching’s very final roles — and one that she will likely be very fondly remembered for — was in the series Star Trek: Picard. She joined the cast of the Alex Kurtzman futuristic science fiction drama series in 2022, after the show moved from CBS All Access to Paramount Plus.
Wersching starred in Season 2 of Picard as The Borg Queen. The character is essentially a physical unit that serves as a central nexus for a hive mind species known in the Star Trek universe as the Borg Collective. The actress played the role in six out of ten episodes of the show that season.
The very final TV appearance of Wersching’s career was in ABC’s police procedural crime drama series The Rookie. She was featured in the fourth episode of Season 5, titled The Choice. It was her sixth episode in the series, as a serial killer known as Rosalind Dyer.
Wersching will also be remembered for her TV work as Leslie Dean in Runaways, Lily Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries, Femi Dodd in Extant and Amelia Joffe in General Hospital, among others. Her big screen career was a lot more limited, with only fleeting roles in the movies Bruce Almighty and Below the Beltway.
