Where Is Mystic Falls Vampire Diaries In Real Life?

The Vampire Diaries premiered in September 2009, and it quickly became a huge hit with fans across the world eagerly waiting.

The show — which is based on the book series of the same name written by L. J. Smith — and tells the story of two vampires who fall in love with the same teenage girl in Mystic Falls, Virginia. As of writing, The Vampire Diaries has a 7.7 rating on IMDb.

The Vampire Diaries stars Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder as the main three characters, and with the show, they all became even more famous.

Prior to the CW hit, Ian Somerhalder was best known for starring in the sci-fi drama show Lost, while Nina Dobrev was known for starring in the Canadian teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation. Paul Wesley appeared in shows like The O.C. and Smallville before The Vampire Diaries, but the CW show is considered his big breakthrough project.

Apart from the three, The Vampire Diaries also stars Steven R. McQueen, Kat Graham, Candice King, Zach Roerig, Michael Trevino, and Matt Davis.

The show was set in the small town of Mystic Falls in Virginia, and fans quickly grew to love some of its most iconic locations such as the restaurant Mystic Grill of The Gilbert House.

While Mystic Falls isn’t a real town, you can actually visit the town the show was shot in. In real life, Mystic Falls is actually Covington, Georgia.

Covington is a part of the Atlanta metropolitan area — just 35-miles east of Atlanta — and its population is slightly over 14,000.

Here’s What You Can Do In The Town From The Vampire Diaries

Covington became a huge tourist spot ever since the show premiered, and considering The Vampire Diaries has two spin-offs — The Originals and Legacies — the town is still frequently visited by viewers who are eager to explore Mystic Falls. Even though The Vampire Diaries wrapped up in 2017 after eight successful seasons, fans from across the globe still go to visit the shooting locations.

In Covington, there are plenty of The Vampire Diaries spots that you can visit. According to Explore Georgie, you can go on an official Mystic Falls Tour which takes two hours.

The Mystic Falls Tour includes “iconic locations like the Clocktower including the town square, exclusive porch access to the ever famous Gilbert House, Caroline Forbes’ House, all things Mystic Falls and many more scenes from all 8 seasons of the show including the exclusive Lockwood Mansion.” As of writing, the tour costs $55 per person.

In fact, if you decide to stay overnight in the town, you can actually book a room in The Twelve Oaks Bed & Breakfast, which is actually the building that was the old Lockwood estate in the show. According to Popsugar, the bed and breakfast even has a Salvatore-inspired room!

A fun fact about the city’s Historic District is that it is “listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic Courthouse (Clocktower) was built in 1884.”

Apart from the locations mentioned above, in Covington, you can also visit the Mystic Falls Cemetery — the location in which Elena Gilbert met Stefan Salvatore for the first time.

Besides visiting locations where the show was shot, Covington also has numerous gift shops in which you can buy Vampire Diaries merch. For anyone who is a big fan of the show, traveling to Covington, Georgia should be on their bucket list!

Apart from The Vampire Diaries, Covington, Georgia has been a town seen in numerous Hollywood projects. Most recently, the Netflix hit Sweet Magnolias was filmed there. Apart from that, movies such as Selma (2014), Sweet Home Alabama (2002), and Remember the Titans (1999) were also shot in the picturesque Georgia town.
