On Monday, February 26, viewers of The View were treated to a memorable on-air slip-up when Whoopi Goldberg mistakenly mixed up the name of the show’s medical expert.
As the show was heading into a commercial break, the 70-year-old Goldberg was meant to introduce the special guest and medical expert, Dr. Jennifer Ashton. However, she inadvertently called her Jennifer Aniston instead.
The slip occurred during a discussion about Punch, a monkey that gained international attention after being rejected by its mother at birth at the Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan. The heartwarming tale of Punch finding solace in a stuffed orange orangutan was detailed in a report by USA Today.
During the segment, host Ana Navarro wondered why the zoo staff couldn’t relocate Punch to an environment with more amicable monkeys. Goldberg interjected with her thoughts on the matter.
“They have to let it play out the way it would play out in the wild, that’s just the way it is,” Goldberg explained. “But you know what, you know who I’m going to ask this question to? When we come back, Dr. Jennifer Aniston is going to be with us, and I’m going to ask her what she thinks.”
Navarro, 54, promptly corrected Goldberg, which led to a playful, sarcastic response from the Color Purple actress: “Thanks, Ana.” As the show resumed after the break, Goldberg humorously embraced her earlier blunder, continuing the joke on air.
“I just want to point out that I called my friend, the great primate specialist Dr. Jen, Jennifer Aniston and Dr. Jennifer Aniston said to tell you all I was correct, it’s to not create a new situation in the monkey enclosure,” the host joked. “Now, because we have a lot of health topics that have people talking, we’re going to call in another pro: Dr. Jen Ashton.”
