Why Andy Cohen's Apology To Spencer Pratt And Heidi Montag Wasn't Good Enough

Bravo’s Andy Cohen recently apologized to former The Hills stars Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag after an ancient reality TV beef was revived, but Spencer wasn’t keen on burying the hatchet.

There’s a lot of backstory here – some recent, some not so recent – involving all parties, so we’ll quickly recap what led to Andy’s apology, and how this all started.

In terms of recent events, Spencer and Heidi re-entered the reality TV news cycle earlier this month when their house was destroyed in the Palisades fire.

Thanks to the magic of TikTok, followers were able to keep tabs on Heidi and Spencer, the latter of whom quickly attracted a loyal base of fans, all tuning in for his brutally candid dispatches from Los Angeles — and not long after the fire, Spencer and fans managed to get Heidi’s 2010 album Superficial to chart.

In the past few weeks, Spencer has spoken frequently about their financial situation – he and Heidi have also disclosed that their home insurance policy had been canceled not long before the wildfires broke out – and he’s reflected on how the couple invested so much to release Superficial back in 2010.

That brings us to Andy Cohen, what he said, why it came up again, why he apologized, and why Spencer didn’t immediately hug it out with the Bravo exec.

As mentioned above, Heidi’s album Superficial was released in 2010, the same year The Hills stopped airing.

When Spencer and Heidi re-entered the news cycle this month, 15 very eventful years had gone by — and it’s perhaps fair to say that reality TV is a proverbial “small world,” with cross-franchise and network connections everywhere.

Back in 2023, Andy claimed any collaboration between the couple and Bravo would be “weird” because of their previous affiliation with MTV, and he said he didn’t “even have much institutional knowledge” about Spencer and Heidi.

Spencer’s renewed notoriety prompted discussion about potential new reality TV options for the couple, which in turn led to Derek Hough proposing they appear on Dancing With The Stars … not exactly Junior League stuff.

Then someone on Twitter/X told Spencer that Heidi ought to join the cast of Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills.

And although he has been in hustling “beast mode” since the fire, Spencer shut it down fast:

A commenter replied, saying Spencer and Heidi “would be lucky to sit down with” Andy.

Spencer was resolute, responding: “lol yah so lucky the guy that bashes my wife gonna be so lucky to sit with him. Rather sit in my burned house rubble.”

Under that, someone praised Spencer’s undying fidelity to Heidi:

I love how protective you are of her 🩵

You might be wondering if Spencer’s reaction was petty, or perhaps overly dramatic, considering how much time has passed.

Andy’s own home network, Bravo, waded into the controversy and dropped a dime on their boy via its blog “The Daily Dish” in 2011, preserving his remarks about Heidi.

In addition to describing Heidi as “trash” on an old episode of Watch What Happens Live, Andy sniped: “I would sooner stab knives into my own eyes than see [Heidi Montag] on this network.”

After Spencer reminded everyone of what Andy had said back in 2011, the host slash referee apologized anew this week during a segment of his SiriusXM show, Andy Cohen Live:

“I realized that I did apologize for this on Andy Cohen Live several years ago.

“I apologized, so what I will say also is that was mean. That was 14 years ago, and what I really don’t like about it is referring to her as trash.

“That is, I do not, that makes me, I don’t like that at all and I’m really sorry about that, so I apologize again, I guess.”

As far as apologies go, Andy’s was reasonably decent – minus the “I guess” at the end – and he called himself out specifically for describing Heidi as “trash.”

Not too long ago, Andy admitted that his fear of being canceled over old comments keeps him up at night, and while apologizing, he pointed to changing standards of acceptable discourse in pop culture:

“By the way, there were things that we said and did on TV 14 years ago that we wouldn’t do now.

“It just was a different universe but that’s not — I’m not trying to justify it.”

Andy certainly isn’t wrong — the past decade and a half has seen a massive shift in our entertainment vernacular, and a descriptor like “trash” is seen as more dehumanizing today than it was when he initially said it.

Of course, Spencer quickly learned of Andy’s reiterated apology, and he was just as quick to react to it.

Per TMZ, Spencer and Heidi are aware it’s not Andy’s first attempt at making amends, but they also said his “my bad” fell short of expectations:

“Spencer tells TMZ … he and Heidi are both open to an ‘I’m sorry’ message from Andy, but require the Bravo personality to reach out directly to ‘The Hills’ alum … something he’s still yet to do, despite issuing mea culpas on his radio show more than once.

“[Spencer has] seen Andy’s recent apology, where the ‘WWHL’ star expressed regret over calling Heidi ‘trash’ on TV nearly 15 years [ago] … but [Spencer] noted the contrite update didn’t mean a whole lot since AC hadn’t ‘reached out privately.'”

Spencer also had another stipulation, according to the outlet: “Spencer adds he’ll forgive and forget the whole thing if Andy also posts a video dancing to Heidi’s number 1 record, ‘I’ll Do It.'”

Finally, Spencer claims Andy knows exactly how to contact Heidi directly if he genuinely wants to mend fences.
