Julian McMahon, renowned for his roles in Charmed and Nip/Tuck, has tragically passed away at 56 following a private cancer battle. He died in Clearwater, Florida on July 2, with his wife honouring the “beloved” actor. In a statement, his partner shared her heartbreak as she confirmed Julian died “peacefully” following his private health battle. “With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer,” Kelly McMahon told Deadline.
“Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans. His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible. We ask for support during this time to allow our family to grieve in privacy. And we wish for all of those to whom Julian brought joy, to continue to find joy in life. We are grateful for the memories.”
The son of former Australian Prime Minister Billy McMahon, Julian began his journey in showbiz as a model before venturing into acting in the late 1980s. Best known for his stint on Home and Away from 1990 to 1991, he also starred alongside Elliott Gould in his first movie, Wet and Wild Summer!
Pursuing dreams in Hollywood, McMahon appeared in Another World on NBC in 1993, and secured roles in series like Profiler before landing the part of Cole Turner on Charmed, reports the Mirror.
The talented actor was also celebrated for his leading role as Dr Christian Troy in Ryan Murphy’s hit series Nip/Tuck, which earned him international acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination during its six-season run.
His leading man status saw him star in FBI: Most Wanted as Jess LaCroix for three seasons before his departure in 2022. His final two film roles were as Scally in The Surfer and Chick Carlson in The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat.
He also portrayed Prime Minister Stephen Roos in Netflix’s The Residence this year. Not only was he a successful leading man, but he also lent his voice to Dr Doom in the 2005 Fantastic Four video game.
Julian tied the knot with Dannii Minogue in 1994 after meeting her on the set of Home and Away a few years earlier. He even featured in her music video for This Is It, which was about their relationship.
Their careers often kept them apart, with him working in the US and her in the UK. A year and a half later, they decided to part ways.
In 1999, he wed Baywatch star Brooke Burns, and they welcomed a daughter in 2000 before their split in 2001. He then married for a third time in 2014 to Kelly Paniagua.
He once spoke about his dual identity, feeling Australian while living in America. He said: “I feel like I’m Australian on the inside and American on the outside or something. I would never want to leave it behind either. I love Australians, Australianisms, I love my part of being Australian.
“I love where I grew up and how I grew up and, you know, I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
