Zendaya Refused To Film A Scene For ‘Shake It Up’, And Her Reason Is Understandable

Via Disney Channel

Before Zendaya was winning Emmy Awards for her incredible performance as Rue Bennett in Euphoria, and playing Spider-Man’s love interest in the MCU, she had worked on several projects for the Disney Channel. Her breakout role was on the show Shake It Up, which aired from 2010-2013.

During their careers, celebrities are often asked to do things they might disagree with for various reasons. They might be uncomfortable with doing something on camera, or they might be worried a scene will hurt their overall image. Others might think that a certain action or dialogue isn’t right for their character, and will refuse to film certain scenes.

While Zendaya was working on Shake It Up, she was asked to film a scene for the show, but refused. Starting the show at a young age, 14, Zendaya hadn’t kissed anyone before. When she was asked to kiss one of her co-stars for the show, she decided against it.

The Spider-Man: Homecoming actor apparently didn’t want to share her first kiss with the rest of the world, which is completely understandable. Many celebrities, including Zendaya, are very private about certain aspects of their personal lives, including their romantic relationships.

Experiencing your first kiss can already be awkward enough, and sharing it with the world could definitely make anyone feel a little uncomfortable.

Zendaya discussed refusing to film her first kiss on-screen during an interview with British Vogue. “I remember being on Shake It Up and being like, ‘I’m not gonna do this. I’m going to kiss him on the cheek because I haven’t been kissed yet so I don’t want the kiss to be on camera.”

Zendaya refused to kiss anyone on-screen until after she had already had her first real kiss. However, there are several celebrities who have filmed their first kiss for a scene in a film or TV show.

Some of the celebrities who have had a first kiss with one of their co-stars on-screen have mentioned that they were nervous, and it seems some felt uncomfortable with so many people watching (the crew).

According to Insider, Josh Hutcherson discussed filming his “horrible first kiss” for Little Manhattan when he was 11 years old with Seventeen magazine.

“It was a horrible first kiss because I had a crew of like 50 people standing around and watching me. It was the most non-real, non-intimate moment that I could possibly have my first kiss, I think.”

During an interview on Conan, Ashley Benson discussed getting notes from the producers when she was filming her first kiss at 15 for Days of our Lives. “It was very strange. I had my cousin drive me that day, I didn’t want my mom there.”

“I was really nervous. The producers were like, ‘Tilt your head this way, and then go this way.’ It’s all so technical when you kiss on-screen.”

What Are Other Scenes Celebrities Refused To Do For A Film Or TV Show?

Zendaya isn’t the only star to say no to filming a certain scene. Some celebrities have clauses in their contracts in order to make sure certain demands are met.

Queen Latifah added a “no-death” clause to her contract after she grew tired of several of her characters being killed off on-screen. According to the New York Post, she commented, “I was like, ‘Wait a minute, if I keep dying in these movies, I can’t do a sequel.'”

Other stars have refused to film certain scenes because they didn’t think it worked well for their character or the overall plot. According to What Culture, Glenn Close wanted to change a scene for her character while filming Air Force One.

The script initially had a scene with her character, Vice President Kathryn Bennett, breaking down into tears to show her character’s more “vulnerable” side. However, Close refused to do it, telling Vanity Fair it wasn’t something her character would have done.

“They had a scene around that table, where she broke down crying. And I said, ‘I will not do that. I don’t think that would happen, not my VP. My VP would not break down into tears. She would step up to the challenge.’ So they changed it.”

Mrs. Doubtfire‘s original ending had Daniel (Robin Williams) and Miranda (Sally Fields) getting back together. This would have been a happy movie ending, but not a very realistic portrayal of relationships that end in divorce.

Williams and Fields wanted to change the ending, and Chris Columbus, the director, agreed. The ending that had been written was scrapped and changed, with the two characters remaining apart, but friendly.

The ending that was filmed seems much more realistic and genuine than the one that was planned. This is likely because Fields and Williams, both who had experienced divorce, were involved in changing the ending.
