Is James Gun Leaving MCU?

Yes, James Gunn is leaving the MCU. Since the release of “Guardians of the Galaxy” in 2014, James Gunn has become a prominent creative voice in the comic book film industry, going from an independent director to an important figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

After Gunn’s public firing and rehiring by Disney, he went on to write and direct “The Suicide Squad” for DC/Warner Bros. and became the co-leader of DC Studios. Gunn and his partner Peter Safran created a new project slate, which shifted the creative direction of the entire DC universe.

Recently, Gunn confirmed that he will write and direct the upcoming “Superman: Legacy,” which is currently on pause due to the current WGA strike. In an interview with Collider, Gunn shared that he will miss his relationship with Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito, producers at Marvel Studios, as he parts ways with the MCU.

He praised them both, saying that they were incredibly helpful and that he’d miss their wisdom and friendship. Despite this, Gunn remains on good terms with the two producers. With “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” finally releasing in theatres, it marks a victory lap for Gunn’s time in the MCU.

Why Did James Gunn Move to DC?

James Gunn is leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe after directing three “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies. He is moving on to his new full-time job as the co-head of DC Studios, where he will be building a new DC Universe across film, television, and video games, which includes a Superman movie he’s writing and directing. This news comes with the release of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” marking the end of Gunn’s tenure in the MCU.

While Zoe Saldaa and Dave Bautista have already confirmed their exit from Marvel along with Gunn, Chris Pratt, who has played Star Lord in the franchise, is open to continuing as long as Marvel honours what Gunn started. Pratt praised Gunn for his masterful work on the first three films, noting that without him, he would not have had the opportunity to bring the character to life.

James Gunn Tweets

In 2018, writer-director James Gunn was fired from his role in the production of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” by Disney after a series of offensive tweets made by Gunn in 2009 and 2010 resurfaced. The tweets contained jokes about paedophilia and molestation.

The resurfacing of the tweets was initiated by conspiracy theorist and right-wing media personality Mike Cernovich, who has a history of using old Twitter posts to target progressive voices. Cernovich is known for promoting the fake “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory, which falsely claimed that Hillary Clinton and other Democratic leaders were running a child molestation ring out of a Washington, DC, pizzeria.

Gunn, who has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump and the GOP, was seen as a ripe target for Cernovich’s attempt to silence progressive voices. In 2017, Cernovich launched a similar smear campaign against MSNBC contributor Sam Seder over a sarcastic tweet Seder had posted in 2009 regarding Roman Polanski. MSNBC initially cut ties with Seder but later reversed its decision.
