The ‘Notorious’ former MMA champ Conor McGregor appears to be in good spirits following his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in the UFC 229 title fight, and its controversial fallout. The Irish superstar has been seen at a Drake concert and even handed out bottles of his own whiskey to the Dallas Cowboys.

The UFC bout, McGregor’s first since his surprisingly respectable boxing fight with Floyd Mayweather, ended in the fourth round when the Irishman was forced to tap out from Nurmagomedov’s rear naked choke hold.

However, the fight was overshadowed by the unsavory brawl that followed, in which the Russian hopped over the octagon fence to start a bust-up with McGregor’s team, while McGregor ended up being punched in the head by members of the Russian’s team.

McGregor has been served with a one-month suspension on medical grounds. However, unlike Nurmagomedov, the Irishman got his $3 million (£2.2m) prize-money, ensuring he is still one of the most bankable athletes in the world.

The year 2018 was a good one for McGregor, who claimed back in March that he finally surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo as the highest-paid athlete in the world.

According to Forbes, McGregor earned $25.5 million (£19.5m) from his fights and $6.5 million (£5m) from endorsements in the 2016-2017 list, while Ronaldo earned $55 million (£42m) from his Real Madrid salary and bonuses, on top of the $32.8 million (£25m) from endorsements.

However, the next Forbes list may back McGregor’s claims following his fight with Mayweather, which reportedly saw the Irish MMA star pocket $100 million, and recent brand endorsement deals such as the one with Burger King.

In an Instagram post promoting his deal with Burger King, McGregor took no prisoners: ‘Making deals and TAKING deals! Kings recognise Kings!

‘I am also really interested to see this year’s Forbes highest paid athletes list. I have now surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo as I told him I would in 2016.

‘Floyd as a retired fighter that makes ZERO substantial revenue outside of them ropes is not on the list, and in the long game, is already dead.’

McGregor also congratulated Jay-Z at the expense of hip hop artist and businessman Diddy.

‘Congrats to @jayz on his number 1 takeover from @diddy in the highest paid Forbes list. What a take-over!

‘Diddy hasn’t been number 2 in so long. Until now.’

With so much going on in 2018 for the MMA superstar, here is all you need to know about Conor McGregor including what’s his net worth and next fight.

Who is Conor McGregor?

Conor McGregor was born on July 14, 1988 in Crumlin, Dublin. While interested in playing football, McGregor also developed a keen interest in boxing. At the age of 12, McGregor joined the Crumlin Boxing Club.

In Crumlin, McGregor said you either had to be ‘good at football or you had to know how to fight’.

In 2006, McGregor started training in mixed martial arts with his friend Tom Egan and in two years later he made his professional MMA debut against Gary Morris, which he won in a second round technical knockout.

Over the next few years he moved up and down weight divisions with mixed results until it all started to come together in 2011, when McGregor went on an eight-match winning streak, culminating in him winning three CWFC championships.

From 2013, McGregor started fighting in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. His first ever UFC fight was against Marcus Brimage on the UFC on Fuel TV: Mousasi vs Latifi card.

McGregor’s undefeated streak carried over from the CWFC years to the UFC, where the MMA fighter was undefeated until March 5, 2016, when he lost to Nate Diaz in the welterweight division after submitting to a rear naked choke.

In that time however, McGregor won the interim UFC Featherweight Championship, and then won and unified the UFC Featherweight Championship in December 2015.

McGregor made up for his welterweight debut loss by getting revenge on Nate Diaz in August 2016, whom he beat by a majority decision of 20-3.

McGregor’s last UFC fight came in November 2016, when he won the UFC Lightweight Championship against Eddie Alvarez.

After his victory over Alvarez, McGregor took time off from the UFC to focus on his newborn son.

Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather

The idea of a Mayweather v McGregor fight first started floating in 2015, when the MMA star said that he would ‘kill’ Floyd Mayweather in ‘less than 30 seconds’.

Things began to take shape in January 2017 when Dana White offered Mayweather $25 million to fight McGregor in the UFC octagon.

In March 2017, Mayweather told McGregor to make the fight happen and ‘sign the paper’.

In May 2017, McGregor did and a boxing match moved closer to becoming reality.

The fight finally happened on August 26, 2017 in Las Vegas. On the night, in front of a crowd of 20,000, Floyd Mayweather beat Conor McGregor by TKO in the tenth round, and pocketed at least $100 million for his efforts.

McGregor is expected to have earned at least $30 million from the fight purse, plus a further share of ticket sales, pay-per-view and merchandising revenues.

Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov

Despite his vows to return to the UFC as the King of the Octagon, his fight against Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov ended in disastrous fashion.

It was a relatively measured fight that was preceded by an ill-tempered promotional tour.

McGregor at one point called Nurmagomedov’s manager a ‘terrorist’ and a ‘rat’, and even offended the Russian, who is a Sunni Muslim, by offering him a drink of his whiskey at the New York press conference.

From the outset, the Russian imposed himself on McGregor and the fight, wrapping the Irishman in vicious grips and forcing a takedown.

The second round didn’t go much better for the Irish man, with Nurmagomedov rocking the former UFC champ with a crushing overhand right.

Somehow McGregor survived the onslaught in the second round and even came out strong in the third, matching the Russian’s intensity and hits.

However, it was a false dawn as Nurmagomedov ended the fight in the fourth with a rear naked choke hold, forcing McGregor to tap out.

What is Conor McGregor’s net worth?

Conor McGregor’s net worth is estimated to be $85 million (£61.2 million), according to Celebrity Net Worth.

This is taking into account the estimated $100 million McGregor is thought to have ultimately earned from the Mayweather fight, which, after tax, would come to $85 million.

These figures lead people to believe that McGregor really will top Forbes’s 2018 highest-paid athlete list.

Following his UFC 229 loss, McGregor was busy promoting his brand new Irish whiskey, Proper No. 12.

While reportedly not tasting great, the whiskey, which was released by McGregor in the run up to the Nurmagomedov fight and retails at $34.99, sold out on the night of the fight. According to McGregor, the drink set ‘sales’ and ‘buy’ records.

In terms of revenue, UFC boss Dana White believes whiskey could make McGregor a billion-dollar man, similar to George Clooney, who sold his Casamigo tequila brand to Diageo for $1 billion.

‘The last thing he needs to worry about is his check,’ White said.

‘The whisky thing is probably going to make this kid a billion dollars. They can’t keep his Proper 12 whisky, they can’t keep it off the shelves.

‘It’s flying off the shelves. All the casinos around here are not only serving it, selling it. He’s killing it and good for him.’

How did Conor McGregor make his money?

According to Celebrity Net Worth, most of Conor McGregor’s money comes from his fights.

He reportedly earned $12 million when he defeated Jose Aldo in December 2015, between $10-15 million for his first bout with Nate Diaz and a further $25 million for the rematch at UFC 202.

McGregor also got $3 million for his fight against Nurmagomedov, once again consolidating his reputation as one of the most marketable and bankable athletes in the world.

On top of the Mayweather and the Nurmagomedov fight money, McGregor also generates significant income from endorsements such as the recent Burger King partnership.

In 2017, McGregor reportedly earned $7 million from endorsement deals with Budwesier, Beats and Anhueser-Busch InBev.

Conor McGregor’s next fight

Following his loss in UFC 229, McGregor took to Twitter to call for a rematch against Nurmagomedov, saying: ‘Good knock. Looking forward to the rematch.’ According to Betfair, the likelihood of a rematch with the Russian stands at 4/6.

Another potential McGregor fight is a second rematch against Nate Diaz. Diaz beat McGrgeor in their first fight, only for the Irishman to make it 1-1 in the first rematch.

He told ESPN that there will be a third fight, saying: ‘Nate Diaz will always have a rematch off of me,’ McGregor said.

‘No matter what happens, I will always give that man his rematch. He gave me a rematch, I give him a rematch. That’s the way it is. When it will happen, I don’t know. We will complete that trilogy, no doubt about it.’ Betfair has the fight down as 3/1.

Anderson Silva is also a name in the mix, with McGregor telling ESPN ahead of UFC 229 that he would ‘be interested in an Anderson Silva bout’.

‘I swear to God. Anderson is a legend of the game. I’m sure he’s hunting for a few quid, as well,’ McGregor said.

The Brazilian superfighter responded on Instagram: ‘It would be a great honour to test myself for ‘fighting’ with Conor McGregor. He is an electric fighter, and has already proven that he has to be respected. Let’s make this happen!

‘The UFC wants super fights, I’m sure fans from all 4 corners of the world want to see this fight.’ The superfight’s odds of happening stand at 11/2.

Other potential fighters in the race to face McGrgegor include Tony Ferguson and Georges St Pierre.
