A man is dead and another is in custody following an alleged early morning assault in a Queensland holiday town.

Police say emergency crews were called to Hastings Street on the tourist strip at Noosa Heads after reports a man had been assaulted about 6am on Sunday.

He died at the scene a short time later.

A man has since been taken into custody and is assisting detectives with their inquiries.

A crime scene has been declared and witnesses or anyone with information is being urged to contact investigators.
