A man has been tasered by police after he boarded a tram and allegedly threatened to kill his fellow passengers while armed with a knife.

The 57-year-old man boarded the tram on Collins Street, inner-city Melbourne, at about around 8.25am on Saturday before demanding the driver open the doors.

After the driver refused, the man allegedly wielded a knife and was heard threatening to ‘slit the throat’ of terrified passengers nearby.

In footage of the tense ordeal, police officers are seen conversing with the man from outside the carriage before two officers in tactical gear take control.

As the man attempts to grab a woman’s hair two male officers rush into the carriage before deploying a taser on the 57-year-old.

Witnesses claim the man started getting aggressive shortly after boarding the tram.

‘Get me out of here,’ he screams in the footage.

‘Open this f***ing door or I will slit this woman’s throat.’

Officers urge the man to put the knife down and exit the carriage.

The man responds: ‘No. Get the car out of here or I’ll start killing these girls.’

Two large officers then storm the tram, with one deploying a taser on the knifeman.

Up to 10 passengers and the driver are evacuated as the man is put in handcuffs.

Passenger Jamara Janic said people had remained frozen in their seats over fears any sudden movement would catch the man’s attention.

‘Hearing someone say, and thinking, that they are going to kill someone is so scary,’ she told 7News.

‘I was looking at the passenger beside me, he started ducking so I ducked as well and just started praying.’

The man is alleged to have stolen from a 7-Eleven before boarding the tram.

He has been charged with armed robbery, false imprisonment, making threats to kill, and assault and is set to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court.
