Matt Tebbutt is a chef and television presenter. He is best known as host of Saturday Kitchen on BBC One and Food Unwrapped on Channel 4. He is a judge for MasterChef: The Professionals. Matt has also appeared on Market Kitchen, Drop Down Menu, Great British Menu and Save Money: Good Food.
Born in High Wycombe, Matt spent his formative years in South Wales, where he moved at 6 months old. He attended Rougemont School in Newport before pursuing Geography and Anthropology at Oxford Brookes University, where he considered a career in the RAF.
Matt has a wealth of experience in the restaurant industry as well as in TV and authoring cookbooks and regularly contributing to food and travel magazines. He earned his culinary stripes at the esteemed Leiths School of Food & Wine in London. His early training included working under heavyweights like Marco Pierre White (at The Oak Room and Criterion), Bruce Poole, Sally Clarke, and Alastair Little — whom he credits as the greatest culinary influence behind his cooking.
In 2001, Matt and his wife Lisa returned to Wales and transformed the Foxhunter pub in Nant-y-derry into a celebrated restaurant. It was awarded the AA Restaurant of the Year for Wales in 2004. He ran and owned The Foxhunter until 2014, when he decided to switch focus to his television career.
After guest-presenting on Saturday Kitchen in 2009, standing in for James Martin, Matt eventually took over the mantle permanently in 2016. He also co-presents Food Unwrapped on Channel 4 and has appeared on Market Kitchen, Drop Down Menu, Great British Menu and Save Money: Good Food.
In addition to his TV work, Matt has authored several cookbooks. His 2008 debut, Cooks Country: Modern British Rural Cooking, was followed by Guilty Pleasures, in 2013, Weekend in 2021, and, most recently, Matt Tebbutt’s Pub Food in August 2024 — an ode to pub-style cuisine, grounded in his years running the Foxhunter.

Matt Tebbutt MasterChef: The Professionals
On 6 September 2025, Matt Tebbutt was confirmed as a judge for the 18th series of MasterChef: The Professionals alongside Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. He replaced Gregg Wallace, who was sacked in July 2025 after a report upheld a series of misconduct allegations relating to his time on the MasterChef.
The Saturday Kitchen presenter said: “It’s an absolute honour to be working alongside these two titans of the food world. Their knowledge and uncompromising attitude is now the stuff of legend and I look forward to them taking me under their wing and seeing the chefs get off to a flying start in the competition!”
The three judges will also be joined by a variety of exciting guest judges in the first stage of the competition. With their own experience and food backgrounds helping to oversee the Skills Tests, the guest judge in each Heat will add another element of surprise for the professional chefs walking through the MasterChef kitchen doors for the very first time.
Wareing told the BBC: “I’m really looking forward to working with Matt and his experience, both on screen and in the industry, speaks for itself. This show is all about showcasing and celebrating the best up-and-coming talent emerging from our country’s professional kitchens, and Matt, Monica and I will be expecting the highest standards from our chefs this year. I can’t wait for what will be a fantastic next series.”
