A Michigan man who repeatedly broke into the home of renowned rapper Eminem has been sentenced to a maximum of 30 years in prison. According to CBS, the individual was found guilty of trespassing on Eminem’s property on two separate occasions over a span of five years.

On June 17, 2025, the Macomb County Circuit Court issued the sentencing for 32-year-old Matthew Hughes. He was convicted of first-degree home invasion and aggravated stalking related to an incident that occurred in August 2024. Assistant Prosecutor Seven Fox urged the jury—composed of eight men and four women—to deliver a conviction for Hughes’ persistent and threatening behavior.

The events have had a profound psychological impact on Eminem, also known as Marshall Mathers, prompting increased isolation. The case has raised broader concerns about celebrity safety and the ongoing threat posed by obsessive individuals.

Following a two-day trial, the jury reached a unanimous verdict in approximately 90 minutes. During closing arguments, Fox stated:

“People long for fame, they want fame, but fame can put you in a bubble. That’s the life that he [Eminem] has to live in. Why? Because of men like Matthew Hughes.”

Sentencing Details

As reported by the Detroit Free Press, Hughes was handed a sentence of 15 to 30 years for first-degree home invasion. Additionally, he received a separate sentence of three to seven years, plus 60 months, for aggravated stalking. Both sentences will be served consecutively, meaning Hughes faces a minimum of 18 years and a potential maximum of 37 and a half years in prison. Judge Diane Druzinski presided over the sentencing, which followed the May 2025 conviction.

Timeline of the Intrusions

Over a period of five years, Hughes was involved in three known home invasion incidents involving Eminem’s properties:

    1. June 2019
Hughes first illegally entered one of Eminem’s former homes in Rochester Hills, Michigan. He was arrested on the spot and sentenced to 90 days in jail. This marked the beginning of his fixation on the rapper.

    2. April 2020
In a more alarming breach, Hughes broke into Eminem’s mansion in Clinton Township by smashing a kitchen window with a brick late at night. Eminem reportedly awoke to find Hughes in his living room. Hughes later told authorities he had intended to harm the artist.
