Brock Purdy has traveled a remarkable path since being selected as the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Initially a backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, Purdy took over the starting role in 2023 and guided the team to Super Bowl LVIII.

However, the 2024 season proved challenging for the 49ers. Plagued by injuries to key players, they posted a disappointing 6-11 record and finished 4th in the NFC West. With a healthier roster returning in 2025, expectations are once again high for Purdy and the team.

Despite the optimism, sports analyst Colin Cowherd isn’t convinced. On Friday, he named his top five Super Bowl contenders for the upcoming season—excluding the 49ers. His list included the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles, and Los Angeles Rams.

Cowherd voiced concern about the direction of the 49ers with Purdy under center:

“I don’t think Brock Purdy now with an older team and a shaky offensive line works,” Cowherd remarked.

Purdy’s 2024 Stats and Contract Extension

Despite missing the playoffs last season, Purdy threw for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns. The 49ers, clearly invested in his future, offered him a five-year, $265 million contract extension in May—solidifying their trust in him as their franchise quarterback.

Still, questions have surfaced as the team gears up for training camp. Purdy missed practice on Friday for personal reasons, and earlier in the week, he threw back-to-back interceptions before reportedly bouncing back with a better showing on Thursday.

Former NFL MVP Matt Ryan, speaking with NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, shared his insight on what comes with a major contract:

“When you sign big extensions, there are expectations and pressure, but it’s important to stay true to yourself,” Ryan said. “They’re investing in who you are, and there’s room to grow, but you can’t try to do too much.”

“It’s about sticking to the scheme, reading plays one at a time, and making consistent, smart decisions. That’s what he needs to focus on.”
