David Whelan is an Irish singer-songwriter. He is best known as the frontman for the Irish indie pop rock group Wild Youth. In May 2023 the band represented Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest with their song, We Are One.

According to the Eurovision Song Contest website, Wild Youth won their place to represent Ireland through the Late Late Show, fighting off fierce competition, including an entry from punk legend John Lydon and his band Public Image Ltd’s emotional song Hawaii, dedicated to Lydon’s sick wife, Nora Forster.

Aside from their success in Ireland, Wild Youth have been the support act for stars like Mumford and Sons, Niall Horan, Lewis Capaldi, The Script, Zara Larson and Westlife. They have also made headline appearances at Electric Picnic, Indiependence, Boat Yard Festival and more.

The Dublin band, comprised of lead vocalist David, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Conor O’Donohoe, lead guitarist Ed Porter and drummer Callum McAdam, was formed in 2016 and released their debut single ‘All or Nothing’ in 2017. Conor and David were childhood best friends and always made music together growing up. Conor lost his mother, Jackie, to a brain tumour in 2011 at the age of 56.

David Whelan Dancing with the Stars Ireland

Wild Youth band member David Whelan is a contestant on the seventh series of Dancing with the Stars on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player. He joined the cast of RTE’s Dancing with the Stars alongside retired RTE newscaster Eileen Dunne, drag queen Blu Hydrangea, Cork TikTok star Miriam Mullins, Rosanna Davison and Fair City’s Shane Quigley Murphy.

The line-up also includes RTE’s Laura Fox, jockey Davy Russell, presenter Katja Mia, Rory Cowan and Paralympian Jason Smyth.

“I’m feeling very excited. I’m very nervous. I’ve never danced like this before in my life so it’s a new experience, especially with a partner,” Whelan said. “Getting used to that is one thing, getting used to the fake tan is another! I don’t mind the sequins; I’ve worn some crazy stuff in my life so far!

“Apart from a nightclub dance floor when I was in my mid-20s, I wouldn’t say I danced a lot, but I’m loving it,” he added.

Wild Youth frontman David Whelan had a serious accident which required him to undergo major surgery in 2023. Speaking before the band’s Eurosong bid to represent Ireland in the Eurovision, David said: “I unfortunately had a serious accident at the beginning of this year which required major surgery. I feared I would not even make it onto the stage tonight.”

Wild Youth’s David Whelan is in a relationship with his girlfriend Ruth Devine, a professional dancer based in Dublin. David and Ruth have been together since the age of 13. Ruth is the owner of the Devine Dance Company.

In an interview with Hotpress back in 2019, Conor and David admitted that many of their songs were about their previous relationships.
