On Tuesday, August 12, the winners of the 77th Emmy Awards in juried categories were revealed, and Beyoncé secured her first Emmy. She won in the Outstanding Costumes for Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Programming category for her Netflix special Beyoncé Bowl, serving as the costume designer.

This milestone has sparked discussion about whether the singer has reached EGOT status. The title “EGOT” is given to those who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. While Beyoncé now holds an Emmy and multiple Grammys, she has never won an Oscar or a Tony, meaning she is currently halfway to achieving the distinction.

Only 27 individuals have ever achieved EGOT status, including Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson, Viola Davis, Elton John, and Helen Hayes. Composer Richard Rodgers was the first to accomplish it.

Beyoncé has received an Oscar nomination in 2022 but has never been nominated for a Tony Award. Her recent Emmy win came in a juried category, which is decided through a panel evaluation rather than a standard voting process. Such categories tend to be highly technical and rarely awarded to major stars.

She shared the award with costume designer Shiona Turini, assistant costume designers Erica Rice and Molly Peters, costume supervisor Chelsea Staebell, and head of workroom Timothy White. These juried awards will be formally presented at the 77th Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 6 and 7 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Beyoncé’s Emmy history

In addition to her win this year, Beyoncé is also nominated in three other categories: Outstanding Variety Special (Live), Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special (with Alex Rudzinski), and Outstanding Open/Tease (a Sports Emmy). In the first category, she competes against her husband Jay-Z, who served as an executive producer on Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show.

Prior to 2025, Beyoncé had earned 10 Emmy nominations without a win. Her first nomination came in 2013 for Outstanding Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program for her Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show. Her 2019 documentary Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé earned four nominations, while her 2016 visual album Lemonade received two. In 2015, her concert special On the Run Tour: Beyoncé and Jay-Z was nominated for Outstanding Special Class Program.

While this marks Beyoncé’s first Emmy win, Jay-Z already has multiple awards to his name. He has won two Primetime Emmys—in 2022 for The Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show and in 2023 for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special for the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show—and one Sports Emmy in 2011 for Run This Town performed live at Super Bowl XLIV.

Highlights from the Beyoncé Bowl

The Beyoncé Bowl took place on December 25, 2024, during the NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans. It marked the first time Beyoncé performed tracks from her 2024 album Cowboy Carter live, including Blackbiird, 16 Carriages, and YA YA.

The event featured guest appearances by Post Malone and Shaboozey, among others. During her performance of Texas Hold ’Em, Beyoncé brought her daughter Blue Ivy on stage. She also performed Blackbiird alongside Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy, and Reyna Roberts, and teamed up with Post Malone for Levii’s Jeans, released in March 2024.

The performance drew significant attention and was later released on Netflix under the title Beyoncé Bowl.
