Andrea Thompson, a renowned British strongwoman and powerlifter, clinched the title of World’s Strongest Woman at the 2025 Official Strongman Games World Championship held in Arlington, Texas. Previously, Thompson secured a third-place finish in 2019 and came in second in 2022 at this prestigious competition.
Thompson’s journey in the strongwoman arena began in 2016, according to Strongman Archives. Controversy
The path to Thompson’s 2025 triumph was not without controversy, as she was awarded the title after American competitor Jammie Booker was disqualified. Booker’s disqualification came after it was revealed that she breached the Official Strongman Games World Championship rules by competing in a category not consistent with her biological sex.
“It appears that an athlete who is biologically male and who now identifies as female competed in the Women’s Open category,” organizers said in a social media statement. “Official Strongman officials were unaware of this fact ahead of the competition and we have been urgently investigating since being informed.”
“Had we been aware, or had this been declared at any point before or during the competition, this athlete would not have been permitted to compete in the Woman’s Open category,” they added.
Former strongman competitor Laurence Shahlaei, who coached Thompson, announced the UK lifter as the winner in an Instagram post just prior to Strongman’s announcement. Shahlaei told Fox News Digital that he had been told Thompson would be crowned the champion and that an official announcement would be made.
Shahlaei wrote: “A huge congratulations to my client but more importantly, my very good friend @andreathompson_strongwoman for winning the World’s Strongest Woman 2025.
“You worked your @$$ off for this and I’m so proud of you. You absolutely dominated the deadlift, log and circus dumbbell and while there are still a couple of weaknesses to work on, you were still the strongest woman on the day.
“This win hasn’t come without controversy, but I want to make it very clear that while I support and applaud people for being who they want to be, sport is sport and the women’s classes exist for a reason.”
