Scottish chef Orry Shand, the mastermind behind Falls by Orry Shand, a renowned fine dining establishment located in the picturesque Royal Deeside area of Banchory, is set to captivate audiences on the 2026 series of the Great British Menu, airing on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer. Shand, who hails from Ellon in Aberdeenshire, previously held the position of Executive Chef at the esteemed Scottish catering company Entier Ltd.
Shand’s culinary journey began at the tender age of 14, eventually leading him to Edinburgh, where he refined his skills at the prestigious Number One Restaurant in The Balmoral Hotel, which boasted a Michelin star at the time. His quest for culinary excellence continued at the illustrious two Michelin-starred Restaurant Andrew Fairlie, located at the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire.
Upon returning to Aberdeen, Shand played a pivotal role in launching The Chester Hotel. In 2017, he embarked on a new chapter with Entier Ltd, one of Scotland’s largest independent catering companies. As the Executive Chef, Shand earned acclaim for his meticulous attention to detail, innovative approach, and commitment to seasonal ingredients. His responsibilities included managing a production and retail kitchen, orchestrating private dining and events, and nurturing the next generation of chefs through an apprentice program.
Awards/achievements
Orry’s culinary prowess has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, such as the title of Scottish Chef of the Year in 2019 and National Chef of the Year 2024-25, awarded by The Craft Guild of Chefs in London. He also showcased his skills on an international platform, representing Scotland at the 2024 IKA Culinary Olympics held in Stuttgart, Germany.
“From 2019 to 2021, I had the honor of being named Scottish Chef of the Year,” Shand reflected. “Receiving such a highly esteemed award was not only a testament to my dedication to the culinary arts but also an acknowledgment of the hard work, creativity, and passion that I bring to every dish.”
I’ve also had the privilege of representing Scotland on an international stage at this years IKA Culinary Olympics, where I was the team manager. I’m proud to say that team Scotland secured two silver medals. Competing at the Culinary Olympics is an extraordinary experience that demands the highest level of skill, innovation, and precision. I’m extremely proud of everything that team Scotland achieved.”
