Whitney Choi, hailing from Scotland, is making waves as a contestant on the 2026 edition of The Great Pottery Throw Down. He is the visionary behind MacChoi Pottery, a quaint shop located in Glasgow. In addition to his artistic endeavors, Whitney imparts knowledge as a chemistry instructor at Taylor High School in New Stevenston, Motherwell.
Whitney’s journey began at age 12 when he moved from his birthplace in Hong Kong to New Zealand, where he commenced high school education. His life took another turn in 2006 when he relocated to Scotland. There, he pursued forensic chemistry at the University of Strathclyde, graduating in 2010. The following year, he earned a post-graduate diploma in education.
Pottery
From a young age, Whitney engaged in various solitary pursuits, including the intricate art of origami—a craft he embraced while still in nursery. His interests expanded to sewing, knitting, and photography. However, in the summer of 2021, Whitney’s passion for pottery was ignited when he joined two consecutive five-week courses at The Craft Pottery Studio, situated in the heart of Glasgow.
During his initial course, Whitney bestowed many of his creations upon friends and family, while retaining a few cherished items for personal use, such as the small blue dipping bowls he and his partner enjoy at home. His first commercial success came when he set up a stall at the Christmas fair hosted by Taylor High, the school where he teaches.
Encouraged by seasoned potters, along with his supportive network of family and friends, Whitney ventured into the commercial pottery scene in 2023. He began showcasing his work at various makers’ markets, including those held at Glasgow’s Merchant Square, Clydebank Shopping Centre, and the renowned Browns Lane in Paisley, as reported by the Daily Record.
