Emily Sue, a contestant on MasterChef Australia 2026, brings a rich culinary heritage to the competition. Born in 1989, Emily’s journey into the world of food started early. Her parents ran a quaint Chinese restaurant in rural New South Wales, a tradition rooted in her family’s history, as her grandfather had launched one of Dubbo’s earliest Chinese eateries.
Childhood for Emily and her sister was often spent in the comforting kitchen of their grandmother. There, they learned to appreciate the art of simple yet delectable Cantonese cooking. Although her grandmother has passed away, the memories and the culinary skills she imparted continue to inspire Emily deeply.
Beyond her culinary pursuits, Emily is also dedicated to her role as a youth worker. Her career, combined with a passion for travel, led her to spend a decade living abroad. During this time, she backpacked, volunteered, and worked in diverse countries, including Canada, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Japan.
Emily’s eight-year stay in Japan was particularly transformative. Immersed in the country’s rich culinary traditions and vibrant culture, she developed a profound love for both. It was here she met her partner, Hidemi, who has since relocated to Australia with her. United by their shared passion for food, the couple enjoys exploring Sydney’s diverse and affordable dining scene on weekends.

Emily Sue is a contestant on the 18th season of MasterChef Australia. A savoury cook, Emily loves experimenting with Asian flavours and is keen to build her sweets game. She’s ready to take on any feedback the MasterChef kitchen gifts her, eager to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
She started out making wontons and hotpots, but realised the importance of cooking whilst at university, ensuring she had cooking facilities on campus. It’s there she tasted food from other cultures, and when MasterChef Australia’s first season aired, it was a ritual to crowd into a dorm room and watch it together. Emily still vividly recalls feeling inspired by seeing Poh Ling Yeow on screen.
In the future, she’d love to combine her loves of cooking and youth work, taking to the road to teach Aussie kids about cooking as a key life skill.
