Mark O’Brien, a talented Irish chef, is making waves as a contestant on the upcoming MasterChef: The Professionals 2026, airing on BBC One. Currently, he is the chef patron at Willy’s, a popular dining spot in Margate, Kent. O’Brien’s culinary journey has seen him sharpen his skills at renowned establishments such as Coppinger Row in Dublin, The Dairy in Clapham, London, and Samphire in Whitstable. He also previously helmed his own Carolina-style BBQ venture, Snake Oil Barbecue, in Margate.

Hailing from Dublin, Mark initially pursued studies in medicinal chemistry and chemical biology at University College Dublin. However, his passion for the culinary arts led him to pivot from academics to gastronomy. In 2012, he completed a brief professional culinary course at Dublin’s Cooks Academy, which paved the way for his first chef role at Coppinger Row, Dublin.

Mark further honed his craft under the tutelage of Robin Gill at The Dairy in Clapham, a notable experience that bolstered his expertise. During the filming of MasterChef: The Professionals 2026, he simultaneously ran his American BBQ pop-up, Snake Oil Barbecue, in Margate. Currently, he leads the kitchen at Willy’s, while his past work includes time at the provenance-focused Samphire in Whitstable.

O’Brien’s passion for cooking was kindled by his uncle, a dedicated chef who shared his love for the culinary world. “He gave me Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential when I was probably too young for it, but it was transformative,” Mark recounted to the BBC.

Dublin-born chef Mark O’Brien is a contestant on MasterChef: The Professionals 2026 on BBC One. The Irish chef has impressed judges Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti with his “fire-led” cooking, combining high-quality meats with techniques learned from his travels in the USA.

Mark is one of three chefs competing in the finals of MasterChef: The Professionals 2026. He will be up against two other talented chefs: Luke Emmess, head chef at the Wykeham Arms in Winchester, and private chef Gareth Baty.

Posting on Instagram ahead of the MasterChef: The Professionals finals week, Mark said: “Crazy to think that it has all led to this. The most intense and exciting experience of my life and I couldn’t imagine a better group of chefs to be with all along the way. Thanks to everyone who has reached out over the last few weeks and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.”
