Hank Winchester is an investigative reporter at the NBC-affiliated WDIV Local 4 station and host of Help Me Hank. He is known for his consumer investigative reporting as the head of Local 4’s “Help Me Hank.” He joined WDIV in 2001, according to his biography on the station’s website.

During his long tenure, Winchester has served as a reporter, Local 4 Defender and a weekend morning News Anchor. In 2015, when Ruth Spencer “Ruth to the Rescue” retired she handed over the reins of the popular consumer unit to Winchester and Help Me Hank has been serving the community in that role since.

Born in Troy, Winchester is a proud graduate of Central Michigan University. Before joining WDIV, he had stints at television stations in Miami (CBS), Flint/Saginaw (CBS), Lansing (CBS) and up in da U.P. , Marquette (NBC).

He has been honored with Emmy awards, Michigan Association of Broadcasters Awards and The Spirit of Detroit Award for his work to help the people in Detroit.

Winchester also co-hosts “The Morning After” podcast with Kelly Stafford, the wife of LA Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. Before joining the Rams, Matthew Stafford played for the Detroit Lions from 2009 to 2020. Winchester has been close with the entire family for years, he wrote in a farewell to the Staffords when they moved to LA in 2021.

Thanks to our incredible family & friends for all the love and support!”

Hank Winchester was married to Jeffrey “Jeff” Grim. Winchester spoke about his divorce from ex-husband Jeff Grim in an episode of “The Morning After” podcast with co-host Kelly Stafford in May 2024. Winchester revealed in a February 2024 article that he discovered he had a heart issue after doing a full health assessment. After going for a physical, his blood work came back and his cholesterol was high.

“I had been experiencing some tightness in my chest recently,” Winchester wrote. “My new family doctor sent me to get a stress test and that led me to take a series of other tests. I did a 2D Echo, a fasting lipid profile, a heart Echo, a CT and a CTA with contract to determine my calcium score. The results were bad. They were really bad. I had lots of plaque and in the most vital arteries.”

A medial intervention was needed urgently. He made some modifications after consulting with his doctor and they chose a medication to help go after that nasty plaque.

Although his father died from an aortic aneurysm, Winchester never associated that with coronary disease. He also leaned some of his older family members had heart issues when they were his age.

Investigations

On June 13, 2025, Beverly Hills Police were joined by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office while executing a search warrant at the home of WDIV Local 4 reporter Hank Winchester. Electronics were seized from the house.

The search warrant, approved by a judge, came after a man reported to police that Winchester allegedly made unwanted sexual advances towards him during a massage, Fox 2 reported. Winchester is currently studying massage therapy.

WDIV released the following statement regarding the investigation: “We here at Local 4 have been made aware of an external investigation involving Hank Winchester. As of this time, he has been placed on administrative leave. While the investigation is ongoing — we won’t make any further comments.”

Winchester’s attorney, Todd Flood, also released a statement regarding the investigation: “Hank has spent decades bringing truth to our community and fighting for our citizens. Because he holds a high-profile position in our community, that can at times generate false accusations. This investigation will end where it began – nowhere.”
