Iain Ross, 29, is an Irish software engineer from Belfast and a contestant on The Great British Bake Off (GBBO) 2025. Originally from Coleraine, Iain is a former amateur powerlifter.The self-proclaimed “Yeastie Boy” mixes his love of live music with sourdough, immortalising album cover art on the crusts of his loaves.
He blends classic flavours with a creative twist, often using fermented fruits and vegetables to enhance the depth and complexity of his flavours. If an ingredient can be pickled, aged, or cultured, he’s eager to give it a try!

Software engineer Iain Ross is a contestant on the 16th series of The Great British Bake Off on Channel 4. The bakers of GBBO 2025 will be competing against each other in the famous baking tent, under the watchful eyes of judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, alongside hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding.
When he got the call from Bake Off, Iain said he thought it was a prank. The 29-year-old said: “When I got the call to confirm my place I was in sheer disbelief, I had no idea it would actually happen. I thought it was a prank at first. I got a call a few minutes after being told, and I thought they were going to tell me they made a mistake and I wasn’t actually on the show!
“I was in the office at work and had to go out to the foyer to take the call and speak in code. Everyone who was walking past, heading to the toilet, looked very concerned and confused.”
Iain is on a mission to rewrite the Bake Off legacy of “Iain from Belfast” once and for all. Announcing the news on Instagram, Iain wrote: “Now who let this wee Irish fella on the bake off?! So excited to announce that I’ll be on this year’s Great British Bake Off! Wish me luck guys, I’m gonna need it.”
