JoJo Siwa has addressed a recent comment made by Miley Cyrus that left her feeling disappointed, though she acknowledged it likely wasn’t meant with bad intent. The moment in question came from a pre-recorded video Cyrus shared during a WorldPride event held in Washington over the weekend of June 7–8, 2025.
In the video, filmed from inside a closet, Cyrus joked,
“I’m going back inside to get more pretzels and find JoJo Siwa and bring her back out.”
On June 12, Siwa responded via Instagram, expressing mixed emotions about the remark while sharing her admiration for Cyrus. Her post included a series of images highlighting her long-time fandom — notably a picture from her Miley Cyrus-themed 5th birthday party.
“People judge no matter what, and it can be very hard, especially when it comes from someone you love and look up to…” Siwa wrote.
Miley Cyrus shares special message for Dreamland Pride Festival:
“I haven’t been in [the closet] since sixth grade. Enjoy coming out of the closet if this Pride is the time for you. It shouldn’t be a month— it should be a year; it should be infinite. I’m going back inside to… pic.twitter.com/O6u356Zbqs

She reflected on her initial reaction, admitting she spent a couple of days processing her feelings.
“I wasn’t sure how I felt about things for a couple of days… but I’ve started to come to some thoughts… I don’t believe what Miley said at WorldPride was ill-intended. Honestly, I think it was meant to be a joke — just not a very good one, haha,” she wrote in her caption.
Siwa also shared that she had reached out privately to Cyrus about the joke. Her message was sent with humor, and Cyrus replied with a kind, short message:
“All love. Always.”
Despite the friendly exchange, Siwa used her platform to send a broader message of self-acceptance and resilience to her 11 million followers — a message especially resonant during Pride Month.
“Honestly, the most beautiful thing I’ve learned in the last 5 years is that love is a gorgeous rainbow. Don’t question yourself, don’t second-guess yourself, just love,” she advised.
She acknowledged how hard it can be to face judgment, but emphasized the importance of being content with oneself:
“People judge no matter what. But if you feel happy and content with yourself, that’s what matters.”
Context: JoJo Siwa’s Identity and Miley Cyrus’s Joke
Cyrus’s comment came amid Siwa’s public journey exploring her sexual identity. Recently, the 22-year-old confirmed she is in a relationship with 32-year-old Chris Hughes, whom she met on the U.K. edition of Celebrity Big Brother earlier this year.
During the show, Siwa opened up about her sexuality:
“I’ve always told myself I’m a lesbian, but I think being here, I’ve realized, ‘Oh no, I’m not a lesbian, I’m queer.’ I think that’s really cool. I’m switching letters.”
Following her appearance on the show — and after ending her previous relationship with Kath Ebbs — speculation about a romance between Siwa and Hughes grew. Hughes later posted a Snapchat selfie of the two in bed, confirming their closeness.
In an exclusive interview with The Guardian published June 2, Siwa confirmed the relationship:
“It’s not platonic anymore, and it’s been a beautiful development, a beautiful connection. I’m absolutely head over heels for him, and he’s the same way.”
Cyrus’s joke, referencing the “closet” in the context of this personal journey, hit a sensitive note — especially coming from someone Siwa has long admired and during a time of celebration and reflection for the LGBTQ+ community.
Closing Note
While Siwa accepted that the joke wasn’t meant to hurt, her response highlights how even well-intentioned humor can feel hurtful, particularly when identity and admiration are involved. Her heartfelt response and emphasis on love and authenticity continue to inspire her fanbase during Pride Month and beyond.
