Claire’s first love wasn’t antiques but horse riding. After leaving school she took up eventing, show jumping, and teaching. A bout of glandular fever put a halt on riding, so she took a part time job in a saleroom and the rest is history!

Claire’s first step into an antiques career was a steep learning curve. She did every job needed in a busy auction house: unpacking, sorting, laying out the saleroom, cataloguing, clerking the sales, and even typing up catalogues.

As her interest in all things antique grew, she took things further and managed to get a job working for Sotheby’s at their salerooms in Torquay. As an assistant in the Collectors Department, Claire’s love of all things quirky and mechanical really kicked in, valuing everything from cigarette cards to postcards, coins, clocks, and toys.
