Lesley Stahl Biography

Lesley Stahl is an American journalist who has spent most of her career with CBS News where she began working in 1971. Since 1991, Stahl has reported for CBS’s 60 Minutes. Most notably, she is famous for her news and television investigations, and award-winning foreign reporting. With all this and determination, she has earned various journalism awards including a Lifetime Achievement News and Documentary Emmy Award in 2003.

Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, she attended and graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts, where she was an honors graduate, majoring in history. After graduating, she began her television broadcasting career at Boston’s original Channel 5, WHDH-TV, as a producer and on-air reporter.

She went on to join CBS in 1971 and became a correspondent in 1974. Before she could join 60 Minutes, she served as a CBS News White House correspondent during the Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan presidencies. Her reports appeared frequently on the CBS Evening News.

During much of that time, Lesley served as moderator of Face the Nation. As a moderator, she interviewed various world leaders such as Margaret Thatcher, Boris Yeltsin, and Yasser Arafat. She was a co-host of American Tonight beside Charles Kuralt. Throughout her 50 – year career in journalism, she has covered some of the most iconic moments in the United States.

Throughout the 21st century, she has investigated the enhanced interrogation methods against Al Qaeda during the Iraq War. In 2020, she gained much media attention for her interview with President Donald Trump. In the interview, Trump stopped the interview short and walked out due to his objections to her warning him about “tough questions” which Trump believed were “inappropriate.”
