Deep Cover has quickly become one of 2025’s breakout comedies, with a glowing 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Nick Mohammed, the film blends sharp improvisational comedy with high-stakes espionage, delivering a fresh twist on the spy genre.

The movie marks a comedic departure for both Howard and Bloom—best known for roles in Jurassic World and Pirates of the Caribbean, respectively—while leaning into Mohammed’s natural comedic timing from shows like Ted Lasso and Intelligence.

Directed by Tom Kingsley, with a screenplay by Ben Ashenden, Alexander Owen, Colin Trevorrow, and Derek Connolly (the latter two previously worked with Howard on the Jurassic World trilogy), Deep Cover follows Kat (Howard), a disillusioned improv teacher who is recruited by the police to lead a sting operation using her acting skills. She ropes in two of her students—Marlon (Bloom), a theatrically intense drama actor, and Hugh (Mohammed), a socially awkward office worker—for an undercover mission that quickly spirals into chaos.

Now streaming on Prime Video, the film has received widespread acclaim for its performances, witty writing, and genre-bending tone.

A Fusion of Comedy Styles Brought the Cast Together

Each of the three leads brings a distinct energy to the ensemble: Kat is bold and eager for a comeback, Marlon takes himself a bit too seriously as a wannabe “method” actor, and Hugh is awkward yet endearing as he searches for belonging.

Howard, reflecting on her role, said what drew her to Deep Cover was how it balanced tension and absurdity. “There are twists and turns. The characters are constantly stuck in corners, forced to improvise their way out—literally. It’s thrilling, hilarious, and weirdly relatable,” she explained. “It scratches that itch of wanting to go on a ride—where you laugh, worry a bit, and have a blast.”

Orlando Bloom Enjoyed Letting Go of Seriousness

Bloom admitted that comedy is not typically his territory, but playing the overly intense Marlon allowed him to explore a fun, self-aware angle. “It was low-hanging fruit,” he said with a grin. “Marlon is trying so hard to be serious in the most ridiculous of situations—it was a joy to dive into that.”

He praised the script, noting that “the humor was already on the page. My job was just to be honest in the moment, and that brought out the comedy. I didn’t need to ‘perform’ funny—I just had to be truthful.”

Nick Mohammed Embraced Hugh’s Vulnerability

Mohammed described Hugh as a character “right in my wheelhouse,” leaning into the awkward, heartwarming comedy he’s known for. “He starts out completely out of his depth,” Mohammed said, “but he grows, finds confidence, and connects with the people around him.”

He also highlighted Hugh’s mini-arc involving a brief but meaningful connection with a character named Josh, and a final showdown where Hugh finally stands tall. “He finds his tribe in Kat and Marlon. That arc was a joy to explore.”

Howard Is Open to Returning to Jurassic World—And Bloom & Mohammed Want In, Too

While promoting Deep Cover, Howard was asked about her future in the Jurassic franchise. Though Claire Dearing’s story wrapped up satisfyingly in Jurassic World: Dominion, Howard said, “The door is always open.” She loved working alongside legacy stars like Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum and expressed excitement for the upcoming installment, Jurassic World: Rebirth.

“As a fan, I’m thrilled to see what comes next,” she said, noting that Rebirth boasts an incredible cast, including Mahershala Ali, Scarlett Johansson, and Jonathan Bailey. “It’s going to be fantastic—I’ll be there opening night.”

Though she sees the franchise as being “about dinosaurs, not specific characters,” Howard didn’t hesitate to say, “I’d be back in a heartbeat if asked.”

Bloom and Mohammed echoed her sentiment with enthusiasm. “I’d love to be in Jurassic,” Mohammed said, while Bloom, smiling, added, “T. rex is my favorite.”
