Peter Meechan is a chef and contestant on MasterChef: The Professionals 2024. He won the Young Chef Young Waiter (YCYW) competition in 2020 and was one the finalists of the Andrew Fairlie Scholarship 2020/21. He cooked for UK’s former Prime Minister Boris Johnson at the Global Investment Summit in 2021 and at the 10 Downing street reception to celebrate Burns Night in March 2022.

Peter finished school at 16 and got his first job in the kitchen at the Macdonald Inchyra Hotel in Falkirk. He spent four years there, working up from commis chef to junior sous chef. He then went on to work at AA Rosette restaurants across Scotland, including The Balmoral Hotel and Gleneagles Townhouse before starting at Askr in Edinburgh in March 2024.

Peter was inspired to become a chef by his hospitality teacher at school. He told the BBC: “Growing up, I wasn’t really into food at home. It was my hospitality teacher at school who inspired me as it was the only subject I enjoyed. My dad was a chef as well, so I think those two reasons played a part in my path.”

27-year-old Peter Meechan is a contestant on MasterChef: The Professionals 2024. He is one of the last four chefs taking part in the final week of the heats of the competition alongside Chiara Tomasoni, Remi Williams and Sophie Archer.

Peter entered MasterChef: The Professionals after he found his current workplace gave him the push in confidence to do it. He said: “Leading up to entering the competition, I’d had a couple of hard years, but joining my current workplace gave me that push in confidence to do it. I wanted to test myself and see where I was at.”

Describing his style of cooking and any influences on it, Peter said: “I am still trying to find my style. I like learning new things and at the moment I am quite into fermentation and using Asian influences. But it’s mostly just super seasonal, modern Scottish food.”
